I used to have one of those... You could get up to 70 with them, it was scary though, felt like driving a rascal scooter on the highway.

You guys south of the border missed out on the “sister” car being the Pontiac Acadian. It was for the more discerning buyer.

Mine was the pontiac t1000. Metallic blue with color matched wheels, 2 door. No radio, no power steering, nothing. Paid $92 for it out of some girls yard. I kinda miss that car.

I worked with a guy that had the shitty Pontiac version, but down here it had a fancy name like T-1000 which sounds like a Terminator.

I wish, mine was a 4 cyl gasser, had a 2 barrel carb with "electronic choke" We swapped out the electronic choke for a manual one that actually worked.

The Chevette had a diesel option but I cannot remember if the Pontiac did as well, also remember there being Ford Escort and Ranger diesels.

It was the heyday of North American ingenuity.

The compact diesel burnout is a beautiful thing.

For tunes, I've been really happy with Valley Runner and it is significantly cheaper than OVTune or KD Max (cannot say if it is better or not). I have no problem holding 70 in the mountains at temps of -20 to 15 F (well, if conditions permit).

$389 for VF Tuner then add

    $55 for Valley Runner
    or
$300 for KD Max Pro (not sure if you can actually by and flash the tune yourself, I don't see that option on their site
    or
    $390 for OV Tune pack

If you are paying someone else to flash your ECU, not sure there is as large a difference in cost.

I had a 2 door Acadian beater for work.. couldn't kill the drivetrain but the rust just just annihilated the unibody.

Panhard rod broke loose on the way home one day, loosey goosey tail wagging lol!

I believe I experienced this last night for the first time. Technically, it was because I didn't warm the truck up fully. But either way, the engine was colder than normal when I drive, and merging onto the highway was a bit scary.

Is say you're right about cold performance. But damn, if the t-stat is closed I'd think you can get up to temp.

It's built like a box, it's not wind resistance friendly!

This is pretty normal. If you insist on leaving it how it is, getting a tune is going to be necessary. The best mileage you're going to get is by using smaller or lighter weight tires with less rolling resistance. Find the lowest RPM at your high gear, and you'll still get about 17-19. Honestly, truck warmth isn't going to help you much if you're travelling that far. High flow air filters will help you as well. Make sure you get a good filter.

Normal Factors for MPG in Winter:
-Tire Weight and Rolling Resistance (there's a large number of articles out there for this one...)
    -Aerodynamics
    -Outside Air Temperature
    -Fuel Mixture
-Truck Maintenance upkeep, check small maintenance pieces, such as PCV, MAF, throttle body, air filter [resistance], etc.
