That should work, I’ll check with Tiff to ensure. We’re getting over COVID now so there should be plenty of time between.

Yeah it’s wild. At least Facebook groups are a great resource to check conditions because people still go up there weekly and can report back.

I'm in. My truck is currently at the shop but I have no reason to believe that it shouldn't be done by then. I'll plan on camping overnight there too.

I'm not on facebook, but I'm hoping the news will have spread to this thread by the time I'm ready to head out :)

Yeah I was kinda worried about that, but I did read some people were up there after the recent snowfall and said it was alright. Certainly a different animal than when it's dry, so i'll continue to check

After a fresh snow is probably a better time as it hasn't been compacted into ice yet. You can still find some traction that way. That's probably about the only way I would try it.

@y=mx+b When/if I feel the need to move the dogs to a different vehicle (while I do an obstacle) for fear of sliding off a mountain… the “fun value” of the day decreases substantially.

Story time… we had just gotten finished with Black Gap in Big Bend NP it took us about an hour/two of slow scenic driving. Black Gap had a few off camber spots on mountain ridges completely flexing out the taco, rock steps that I hit on and dry river bed crossings with steep entrances/exits. When we got to the end a Man with his wife, 2 kids and 2021 Premier Suburban (obviously exceeding its GVWR) were about to enter. He asked "How bad is it?". I said (considering all of the above) "If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't do it". To which he contemplated and proceeded down the trail anyway.

All I said was "I wouldn't do it" knowing he was the reason they put disclaimers like this. (Others also say high clearance required in addition to 4x4)

Then I think about guys like @EatSleepTacos, and how they are actively saying they'd never do FPK again with ice ...makes me think... do I want to be like that guy in the Suburban haha.

I didn't either. At the accident site I couldn't really see the passenger side. On the driver's side the fender isn't even really messed up. I also realize now they were trying to keep me away from the area.

Yeah I'm not keen on sliding off a mountain, so I am having some second thoughts.

It was legitimately scary, we were all shook up by the end of the day. The easy maintained fire road that comes up the back was just a straight sheet of ice. Once we made it to the top, the only way down was to just slide and hope for the best. At one point I called my wife telling her we may be sleeping on the mountain, because it was getting dark at that point and I think it was @UntamedTaco who did a complete 180° down one of the hills.

Watch Matt's Off-road Recovery on the YouTubes and you'll see a huge collection of these types of folks (if you don't already). I can't count how many times I've watched and wondered what these people were thinking.

Ive done big levels in the snow, it was was fun, but be careful driving through the icy waters. A buddy destroyed his bumper on the ice while driving through the deeper waters.
