why is a regular key a huge plus? Seriously asking because I feel the complete opposite.

 

It's a huge "plus" in the same sense that my grandparents prefer letters in the mail over email. Some people fight change and progress...

 

I generally like things very simple and hard to break. Simple as that. Also from working at a dealership I've have 0 issues with physical keys, and tons of issues with push buttons over the years.

 

I have a regular key in my OR, it does just fine.

Put $500 down for an allocation back in August. ‘22 LR TE w/ tech pack. Got a call in late November that it was scheduled to be built early December. Received temp vin and the week values were “48”. Email came in second week of December that it had been delayed to a build date of 1/6/22. Was actually built on the 6th. Temp vin disappeared and got a call from my dealer. Thinks delivery should be last week of January/first week of February. Shows on dealer website that estimated delivery is 1/28/22 - 2/2/22.

Anyone have an earlier delivery date (estimate) than that for a Trail?

I do like it however the pricing does throw me off. At least at the base prices you can get an off road for less than or the same as the price of a trail with the multi terrain select and upgraded suspension. Those bronze wheels are sexy though have to admit.

 

A perfect example is our Rav4 that has the Smart Key. If someone goes to drive and opens the door, the passenger door doesn't unlock. You have to manually unlock it once inside. And honestly, we lock it with the key button every time anyways, not the touch the handle thing.

So I agree, one less thing to break, if your fob runs out of battery how do you start the car? What if a sensor doesn't work? If you break your door handle off, I bet it's way more to replace. It's one of those things I don't care about, after owning a car with it now, it's not big on my priority list but I'd take it if it was offered. It's just not adding any value to me to the OR spec.

It is a nice feature though and totally understandable why people like it.

 

Sorry new to the party. I wanted to experiment with building a trail tacoma but i guess you can't. Sooo that makes it out of my price range right there, esp in this market

 

You can change the settings so that the smart handle unlocks only drivers door or all doors.

 

this is how mine is set.

the main reason I like it is because I don’t hand to get my key out of my pocket, nice in the winter months. I’m pretty sure there’sa way to start the vehicle if the battery in the fob dies. Doesn’t a traditional key have a chip or something in it that can fail as well? I can’t remember the last time I broke my door handle off.

All points make perfect sense! Yeah, I’ll reiterate, I think Smart Key has its merits and I’m good with using either. I guess I was just trying to say that I can see pros and cons to both and it’s not an essential feature I needed.

 

Morning update: my sales rep told me a build date of 1-19, not sure how he arrived at that.

Tried my VIN in the input link this morning and instead of pulling up my build sheet as it’s done all weekend, I got a “input real VIN” error. So it must be being built!

Anyone have clarity into the dealer process? Should they automatically receive a VIN in their system now? Does it take a few days? Etc.

 

Just in case, for those with the fob keys:

When the fob is low on voltage, the car should flash a warning message, giving you a short time to replace the battery. If the fob is dead, you hold it against the start button to start the car. There is a key in the fob to unlock the driver's door, and for vehicles built after 2018, it matches the tailgate key also.

So no, you can't get any more stranded with the fob than you can with a physical key. There are no differences in reliability between the two. People who say otherwise are parroting old speculations that they read elsewhere on this forum.

on a side grumble, I use that manual key to lock the tailgate on my $58k tundra. Bravo Toyota. Even a base Chevy/Ford had a power tailgate lock.

I remember when my 1992 Silverado had power windows/locks. All the old people preferred crank windows. Well guess what, that 1992 Silverado is sitting in my garage right now and the power windows still work perfectly. Some people just resist change.

 

Dealer installed a power lock on my tailgate. I don't want to know what their ridiculous markup on that was , but now that I have it, I consider it an essential mod.

 

So, if I understand this correctly. Your now able to add fog lights to the build on the Trail Edition?

 

That link didn't go anywhere for me, but from what I have heard, Fog Lights aren't available on the Trail due to DOT standards - since it has a lift, they would be too high in the air. So I'd be surprised if there is a manufacturer's option for some. Unless the did something to get them lower etc.

 

Yes you can add those. I just did the build and price yesterday and there were many with that option on the VSPECs that were headed to the SE region.

Pros have had fogs since they came out and they sit higher than all the other models.

Can you all post screenshots? Links go nowhere for me, probably because different region. What's the additional cost? Sounds like luck of the draw to have those on your build...if they decide to put them on or not.
