I had an MTI as a neighbor for a few years. He explained that it’s actually premeditated and planned, usually within the first 2 weeks of training.

When I was in basic I’d used safety pins to make my bed super-tight. I’d used so many that when they flipped my bed the mattress stayed attached. When we came back from the classroom for the planned “you have 30 minutes to square this mess away” they made my flight stand in the shower while they cadre all took pictures with me. Apparently I’d “done something new” and “was going on the wall.”

Told my neighbor that story years later and he yelled “that’s you?” I asked for the picture - he refused to steal it for me.

ritual for finding the first open wall locker:

drop your hat inside and lock it. then go on a rampage trying to find it. make sure to check that wall locker last.

we always used the event to kick off the first health-and-welfare inspection. our commander would play the opening of Usher's "Yeah" on a loop over the company area PA while we inspected.

After I got to permanent duty station, one of my "more seasoned" barracks mates (E4) told me that people use pants blousing bands to keep their top wool blanket snug all the time. You get another personal blanket or sheet or whatever, and sleep on top of the issued blanket. I did that for over a year, never caught any shit form our NCO's during weekly room inspections.

Had to undo/redo it every week when we handed in [dirty]/were issued [new] bed linens, of course.

That's a super common trick at senior military colleges like Virginia Tech, Norwich, etc. 4 years in the cadet barracks and I never once slept IN my rack.

Nah, drill instructors that do this teach character, discipline and adherence to standards.
