    Dude...
Parking on my lawn... no way, I'd be a his door letting him know that isn't going to fly.

Shanty in the backyard..... hell no! Where I live he better expect that the city inspector, osha, health dept, border patrol, ICE, ATF, and Bozo the Clown to check it out. I'm straight up callin that in, not because I'm a bad neighbor, because it protects me in case of poor construction not up to code, period. I have to follow the law so does he.

Also, if it's an ugly addition it will affect your property value. Who want to live next to a shithole, or a goofy house, or on that looks out of place...ect. That kind of stuff is important to buyers, you need to keep that in mind.

I would call him and let him know that you didn't like the way he's doing things, like parking on your lawn. Sometimes having a talk with someone can help, and lots of times it doesn't, but its a good first step. If you live in the type of neighborhood that sweats this kind of thing then it'll probably take care of itself, if not, you may have to do what you have to do. The thing is, if he builds to code, getting a permit may not be that big of deal for him, and if its his land and they're aren't any neighborhood statutes, then your pretty much going to have to deal with it. I hope it works out for you. I understand the shitty neighbor problem all too well.

Is what he's building taking away from your property value? That's a pretty valid question.

Either call in anonymously now or put up with it until you feel like you need to do so. I wouldn't do the neighborly chat thing. That blows your cover and if you call him in after talking to him, he'll know who ratted him out and that opens up all kinds of possibilities.

I'm an inspector, and I say call it in as a concerned citizen. And, anyway i'm pretty sure your city has an online site to see if your neighbor pulled permits for their work, best be safe when your neighborhood is concerned. Avoid a potential hazard.

Man makes me thankful for my great neighbors...they plow my yard for free, watch my dog, we help each other out.

I voted not to call first. Dealing directly face to face with the family to see what's up then proceed from there & try to air the differences. If they gets you no where then re-evaluate. It depends on how the city infrastructure is setup if they care or not, funding etc...or the guy could be related/friends with the board members...its a small world...that is just me though, you ultimately have to live there. Good luck.

Parks in your yard = Let air out of 2 tires
Trash in yard = Throw it in his car
Rug on fence = Pee or Poo rubbed in

If it is all harmless stuff like that I would just talk to him and say look dude I'm gonna call your ass in if you don't straighten up. If it is able to easily cause bodily to someone or put then in danger I would stand in the front yard waiting for the inspector to show up.

All of which crosses the lines from rude to vandalism...which is a bad idea IMHO....even more so considering there is a legal option.

Of course you wouldn't- People who break laws usually don't wanna get caught.

And it IS the OPS business- If it's an ugly addition to an ugly yard-That affects property values. Code enforcement should already be doing something about it- but since they haven't-It takes someone saying something.

Dime him out! A small remodel or a deck I could turn a blind eye to. A full on addition... Call him in. It's the safety of you and your family and not to mention anyone else who buys that house after him.

A neighbor of mine decided recently to redo their back deck. Had all the materials laid out in his front yard, his buddy brought over a excavator and they started working... on a Sunday. Why Sunday? Because the likelyhood of them getting caught for putting in a new deck would be slim. Where we live if you make any changes to the existing structure to need a permit.

Well, bubba is in the back yard excavatin away when all of the sudden we hear a loud pop and the sound of compressed something or another making it's way to the open air. Dumbasses had hit the gas line... Needless to say, instead of getting the permit for a few hundred and having the line marked by the utility he decided to cut some corners. Wonder how much the few hundred in savings ended up costing him.

Months later his material for the new is still in the front yard, they are missing a car (presumably sold to pay fines) and the old deck is propped up against his fence...

IMHO, Ethically it's your responsibility to be the "Whistle blower", I mean how bad would it suck to buy a house, then it falls apart/or even hurts somebody because codes weren't followed. More of an ethical thing than a Legal responsibility, I feel.

Sorry, I'm a stickler for this topic (Construction Manager)
