I have a 2017 Tacoma with a manual transmission and 4x4. When the truck is in freezing temperatures. The hydraulic system malfunctions. The clutch pedal goes to the floor and stays there. For a matter of seconds then releases suddenly. The front brakes lock up. The only way to get them to release. I have to put the truck in 4low and force the issue. Switching between 1st and reverse. Depending on the temperature and how long it's been sitting dictates the length and severity. After a time then it frees up and I can drive normally. I had the brake fluid pumped out and replaced several times. I can't reproduce the conditions for the dealer because I'm in a warm climate. Anybody with similar issues and How did you solve it,

Same here with the clutch. I just let it warm up, then drive normally

What kind of temps are we talking about? I just endured about a week and a half on constant -45 temps and never experienced this. Clutch was stiff as hell but never stuck like that nor do the brakes lock up.

Please quantify “freezing temperatures”. The clutch is known to get stiff in cold temps. I don’t complain about it until 0F or thereabouts. I have not had any trouble with the brakes, but I have had freezing issues with previous vehicles in sub zero temps. The brakes heat up, melt snow, they cool down, and the moisture freezes. Not normally a problem in regular Minnesota winter weather.

Not too severe actually. I've had it happen in 17 degrees. Then it got colder and kept doing it. Took it to a brake shop. The got me for new rear brakes went skiing the next day and they locked up again. I've had it happen also first in 9 degrees sitting overnight. Got it unstuck then parked it. Went skiing. Came back and the temp was 32 degrees and they were locked up again. I'm pretty sure I confirmed it was the front brakes due to the fact the rear tire was spinning. But it's not just the the brakes the clutch is connected to the hydraulic system and is sticking also.

I’ve had more issues with rear brakes locking up, but not from cold. I’ve had the parking brake lock up in the summer due to mud and water and also had the rear brakes lock up after sitting inside after washing off mud (no parking brake applied).

I surmise that something is wrong to exhibit that behavior at such minimal temps. Neither my current 2020 6MT nor my 2016 6MT did that at extreme temperatures.

My clutch pedal is a little sluggish after sitting in frigid temperatures but once l drive and cycle thru the gears a few times it goes to normal.

My 2nd gen used to do that. A couple of pumps of the clutch with the engine running and it normally went away. Only happened in extreme cold.

I had the clutch not want to return when it hit -12°C a couple weeks back. I just pumped it to free it up. Never had any issue with the brake system though. Just let the truck warm up a bit before driving.

I have had many vehicles and lived in cold climates. But never experienced anything like this. The most frustrating aspect is I can't reproduce the conditions to bring it in.

Rear brakes freezing is likely the brake problem.

Are you engaging the ebrake while it's sitting in these cold conditions? Is the undercarriage wet when you park?

Sometimes just the ebrake cable freezes. If it happens only on one side, the other side would spin and the frozen side hold.

Actually many threads around here about the topic.

I always engage the e brake when parked. When you forget to disengage the e brake and put it in gear and let off 5he clutch. You can actually drive the vehicle. Not well and not fast but it will go forward. When this happens there is no movement until 4lo.
