A good friend of mine back in Ohio has autism (I don’t know anything specific beyond that, it never came up to ask him) and he’s had his CCW for years without any issues.

Just look at any Officer involved shootings and see how many misses there are. They sure put many more rounds down range a year practicing then myself.

You would think so, but the sad truth is just the opposite. Not counting tactical team members the average office only shoots his/her sidearm 1 to 2 times on the range a year. As a 20 year LEO certified by NRA, Glock, H&K and FBI on pistols, shotguns, sub-machine guns and tactical team techniques as an instructor I saw officers who barely could shoot. Many of them had a hard time even getting thru a course. The sad thing most of the non-shooters did not seem to care that they were bad shots.

I also find 45 more comfortable to shoot in the full size lineup, especially the all metal guns like 1911's and P220's. To me, the recoil is a gentle push versus a quick snap. If that makes sense.

Gen 3 + if you're using it for home defense too. Nice to have a light mount.

Don't forget if you are going to CCW buy a belt that is a true gun belt. You will be amazed how much difference it makes carrying comfortable and secured.

I EDC a G26 or a G19. Ammo is easy to get. Never went down the .45 Rabbit hole

.40 s/w for me. I'm pretty accurate w that caliber, though I've considered going to a 9mm for capacity.

IMO, all common defensive handgun calibers (.380, 9x19, .40, .45, etc) have equally dismal performance, so buy high quality ammo and choose a cal that shoots softer and holds more. Once you get away from the bench racing, these are both more significant advantages then having a marginally better "one shot stop" statistic.

If I may add to that, a gun that feels good while holding it at the counter may not feel good upon recoil, or drawing, reloading, etc. I found this to be the case when I tried to learn to like guns other then Glocks, which generally feel like a 2x4 with a stapler for a trigger.

All I have currently that could be concealed is my 1911 in .45ACP. It's a full length pistol and a brick and a half on the weight side. If I had my way, I'd buy a compact in either 9mm or .380. My wife has a 9mm M&P Shield EZ and that is a nice gun for concealed even on her small person.

Not wanting to start a :crapstorm:....but does anyone have the most recent stats on average shots fired during a firearm related self defense situation/encounter? Last I thought I knew is was something like 3.5-5.5??

This 100%. Find a shop that'll let you try before you buy at an in house range. This made it super easy for us to find my wife a gun she was comfortable with without breaking her with heavy recoil or not being able to rack it. Changes the game in gun shopping when you can run 10-20 rds through a couple guns before you make a decision.

@Sig45 I'd also imagine that scales with number of intruders. I'm guessing average is like 1 up to 3 maximum, so a 10+ rd mag should cover you in most cases. More is also nice though for peace of mind, but gotta think about weight and handling when getting extra rounds.

Not wanting to get into mag capacity discussion here.... that'll go south fast. Everyone should use what they're comfortable with.

More curious about the raw data.

9mm around town it’s readily available, cheaper to pratice with, and a subcompact with a comp is really soft and flat shooting.
Woods carry 46O Rowland cause it’ll destroy your family lineage.

The gun you have with you is 100 percent better than the gun you left at home so find something comfortable, you'll be much more likely to carry it everywhere.
