Probably in a sea can already about to be shipped overseas.

bummer these new vehicles are so easy to steal quickly.
Worst part is that its not even like they have to smash the ignition or anything obvious. They have keys and all.
(Assuming its a push button start)

That looks like the pin for the variable valve-lift system added in the JL Pentastar (our 2GR-FKS lacks this feature). If the pin is seized in the retracted position, the valve just stays in low-lift mode, no shrapnel. Replacing all the rockers should fix the problem with no collateral damage. How long was your mom driving with the CEL on? ;)

    Four in the Ottawa area.

    They target push button start.
Do yourselves a favour and buy a Club/steering wheel lock and a OBD port locker. Anything to add time and make the next persons easier to take (as bad as that sounds).
Other then those preventative measures, if they really want it, they’ll take it.

Won’t stop them unfortunately. Physical obstructions are the best line of defence. Time is their worst enemy, and they pack the least amount of gear they can. They might pry off an OBD lock, but they’re not gonna sit there to cut off a steering wheel lock risking exposure in a quiet neighbourhood, when two doors down there’s one with no obstruction.
Covering any visible VINs will also help, as they pull up all the specs with it and can use that to cut keys and program what they need.
So far there have been no reports of them just straight up towing anything away (in my area at least).

[This is info passed on from both friends who are popo and one of the best locksmiths/safetechs in Ontario who owns a Highlander]

Sounds like as a group we need to invest in some apple air tags or similar.

We already have our own shipping service, whats stopping us from starting our own vehicle theft detective agency?
@Shveet can upload the takedowns on youtube.

the best theft deterant you can use for the Tacoma is some 33/35" tires. A lift kit even a cheepo one like some 5100's. Front bumper and winch. Add a splash of mud on the dash and some TEC stickers and the'll be running away from you truck. lol.
If you want to leave your truck unlocked with the keys in it just smash a tail light and put a dent in the box. lol I garantee no one will touch it.
and lastly if you want no one to even look at your, not even park beside your truck, even cover the eyes of their children as they walk by....... then get a flag holder for the bed and a big 5X7 red TEC flag and wear it proudly..... or the jolly roger or the rebel flag same difference. lol.

my key goes into a Faraday cage every time it's not in use.
Been meaning to convert the truck into key-start, might move on this and eat the $150 for the plastic shroud.

there isn't anything than can stop this. my Dad parks his van infront of my truck overnight so i have that going for me, which is nice.

we have an official yotuube channel.
issue with airtag is it only works if theif has iphone. further issue is that it now pings said iphone (which owuld be theif's) that it's being tracked (not really an issue but means they drive straight into a cargo box and wait the car out).

I'd be interested to know what Toyota does in these cases, surely the GPS could pin point a location, but they probably dont give a shit. Fom a business standpoint they know insurance will pay for their interest in the existing loan (if any) and the victim might even buy another Toyota.

Unfortunately these vehicles check all the right boxes for the thieves:
    -Easy to steal
-So common they are basically invisible on the road
    -high value
-lots of getaway time (if stolen from an apartment complex like the FB post)

You don’t need the RFID bags just turn off the remote.
Also where do they see the vin, is it just in the windshield or anywhere else they can get it outside?

Using the same tech as the airtags (UWB) it would be easy to build a range sensing passive interlock to the factory system. Hmmmmmmm market for this?
