Real talk; why not take it apart first before welding it?

I feel like your torch was too far hence some of the porosity.

 

It's tube ending on a scab/load plate, I'm afraid it might be a structural or safety part too. I'd cut and grind it all and start fresh too

 

I wouldn’t trust myself to weld something that actually mattered, if it was my first time welding anyway.

That makes sense.

Hell, if the tube were thick enough...you could bevel it leaving a nice landing and lay a strong ass root weld on it. Followed by a few passes and it'll be the strongest part of that structure.

 

So this is a roll bar - I'm not expecting to pass any type of inspection on it though if I could that would be great. It's really to just provide me some piece of mind since I won't have a lot of the chassis reinforcement on the top of this car that it came with. But that being said at this point it's pretty wedged in; taking it out with just some tack welds has a likelihood of bending the plate as it's removed - if I can even get it out with the plates attached - and every other piece will have to be welded inside the vehicle anyway.

I'm not too worried about the strength because just with the one side done I sense I could throw my whole body against the weak axis (that will be enforced by back rails to the chassis) and have it hold, though it's a valid concern, of course.

I also don't think I can really wedge a grinder in most of that so starting over completely is off the table.

I almost think that now that I have the mass established, I could go back in with a TIG torch and drag a weld pool around it in a methodical fashion to fix any porosity and ugliness. I don't believe I have any penetration issues on this one as it sits, but some of the outer edges could probably be better.


Oh and yes my torch was too far a lot I bet, again due to not physically being able to get around it very well - but I can move some things around and get in there a little better next time since you think .

I have a free waggy 44 as well. If I don’t have an engine hoist by the time I move in June I’m not sure how I’ll load it to take to scrap.

Miss the days of having a mutual agreement with roommates to help lift heavy objects.

@Kwikvette @Speedytech7 I know you guys want to theorize about how to do it properly, but what's the most practical thing for me to do here? I just want to get the thing done so I can drive again. It's been 4+ years sitting here.

 

I mean it's ugly but if it's no a projectile in a crash and you're not in any real racing it's fine. Don't need a cage to drive the street
