Anything welding

What sort of plans do you need ?

Will the rack do double duty for both squats and Bench Presses ? portable bench ?

Will the Rack be fastened to the floor or Ceiling and wall?? Stand Alone ?

Do you plan on a spotter or need a fail safe built into the rack 2 spotters for squats .

Only 500 pounds ??

 

The really bad part is not being person enough to contact you and say I can`t do the job.

Perhaps just bought a portable welder put it on a truck only to realize skills are sadly lacking.

Who knows Hang in there .

Worse case buy a 120VAC welder and Do it yourself

 

Been following this thread for a long time but never posted. I have to say, some of yalls work is absolutely gorgeous. I'm getting my master's degree in Architecture and attempted my first welds at our fab lab a few months ago, it was atrocious but starting to get a little better.

I recently had some damage on my radiator core support from the tiniest impact on my headlight, and I am wanting to build a stronger radiator support. I do a ton of DIY and want to get into welding, from what I have found searching for doing bodywork TIG is my best bet. I am curious if anyone has a recommendation for a good welding machine, and potentially recommendations for a saw that would make cuts like picture below cleanly (our school has a plasma cutter but we're not technically supposed to do any home project on it, I could probably bend the rules on that if necessary). Also, if you have any recommendations for materials for this that would be appreciated too. I know I'm not experienced but I want to buy something that is considered quality to learn on even though I suck now, in hopes that if I ever get decent enough it still holds up. I have a back up plan if all else fails but want to make this a learning experience.

I attached a picture of one that I'm looking to imitate somewhat. This is obviously on a second gen (stolen pic from TW, dont remember the OP but it's on here) and I have a third gen. Am I out of my league or am I somewhat ok attempting to make one of these? Cost isn't an issue and I'm mostly looking to a) learn and b) not have 22 gauge sheet metal supporting my radiator etc. anymore.

 

Just wondering if anyone had existing plans sitting around I could use as a base for building something for myself

I’m 6’3 and most of the outta the box crap isn’t adjustable enough to get in range of my shoulder height and obviously they all shake to shit.

Light enough to move easy strong and stable to not fall over when dumb things happen.

What kind of Material can use source Steel prices area tad expensive ! 2"x2"x3/16" if you want strong or even heavier when you get above 500 pounds

A power Rack for a 5' person does not need to be set up for someone 6'3"

have you looked at all online anywhere else for ideas .

When you can build your own the sky is the limit to what you can make .

think about the questions I asked they can be very important ?

 

Okay, I’ll stew on it and come up with a answer.
Steel would still be my material of choice,

I’d like it to be able to be rolled on at least one side (like a bbq grill)

I’d like it to fit my height but also have some range if friends come over

Provisions for resistance bands bands would be cool,

mostly just wanna be able to fall on it and not dump the weights through a window


I signed up for a online Olympic lifting class that is being paid for by Semper fi fund

working on form and fundamental, ect

but a squat rack was a must for the class and I have til feb 5 to sort it out



i do know that I really liked the quality of the eleiko stuff when I was still active duty

 

The first guy I lined up actually came out here and looked. Then nothing. To this day he never takes my calls.
So I found welder #2. He answers his phone, and talks to me, but never comes to do the job. He is 50 miles away. He wants to put my truck on a trailer, and pull it over there. He doesn't like the cold. I am afraid if he ever got it over there, it might be a long time to get it back. He was the one who told me about cutting and welding along the factory lines. He told me i needed to take both motors out of both trucks. Kinda like "Bring me the broomstick of the wicked witch of the East" I have accomplished this. It was no small feat. I think this guy knows what he's doing. I have talked to some that are clueless. I suspect just out of school. If I wait long enough, the cold will go away, but I want to get it fixed sooner.
I too plan to get a welder for small jobs. I have been looking. Took basic welding is high school decades ago. But this job is extremely critical! Its a one shot deal. I must put it all together, re-install everything before I'll even know for sure if it was done right. That and an alignment. It must be done right the first time! This is where the element of trust and confidence come into play. I am way, way out of my league. It was a long path to get hold of a parts donor truck to get what I need to do the repair, expensive too.
I remain hopeful. Never giving up!

 

Draw it.

That's the first thing they taught me in welding school; don't try to explain it...don't try to piece it while holding material in your hands, just draw it.

 

A quick look online should give you some ideas .

Back in the day power racks and benches where strong and simple nothing fancy .

This is pretty much like building a Bumper so many different styles

Also building one of a kind is always more expensive then mass produced .

Using Channel and having a Iron Worker to punch holes rather then drilling saves hours in labor.

think what would work best in your case.

I have a bad habit of skipping the simple thinking everyone is smarter then me .

Like doing rear brakes I never think to mention to remove the wheels I just go to back off the adjuster to remove the drums

 

I almost did it yesterday while my co-worker and I were coming up with a jig.

Suddenly I put my hood down, went to my bag to get my silver pen, and just drew it out.

Now we're knocking out these bench seats.

 

I was given a couple of buckets of tools a while back and found some of these cool little 90 degree aluminum clamps. Used them to weld up a simple mailbox post for a friend.

 

Just how does it work?

What moves I see the rod seems to be threaded all the way down.

 

The outside part clamps down as you spin the tommy bar.

Oh that one is nice, I’ve found them to be really useful.
I got three of them but one has a bent screw I need to straighten out still.

 

It was the depth perception on the picture that confused me.

I am a newer version of the same thing I just call them corner clamps Aluminum and Copper so you don`t weld steel to the clamp.

 

Yours I can tell because mine is the same .

I thought the square tube was part of the clamp that is what confused me

just the clamp would have been easy
