Wish my GPA was as high as the gas prices.
I had recently bought replacement parts to repair the filler neck shield which was missing previously for whatever reason. I was wondering if there is a part number or a good replacement out there. What’s confused me is that I’ve seen bolts, Phillips head screws, and plastic clips hold those things on, I’m not sure what was OEM originally.

In the image below you can see the heads are completely ripped off.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It seems I can`t see your picture.

I would use what ever works from new I think they were M6x1.0 bolts .

Which might have been never replaced if the fuel filler neck was removed.

Does your new neck have welded nuts or is it just holes ??

Hex Head sheet metal screws or M6X1.0 BOLTS AND NUTS. what ever is easier in your case.

Looking again, they just look like either hex head screws or Phillips, either probably wouldn't matter. The filler neck just has holes in it. 6GLTiRinqQpQlUayrMzsDrgx0_6s6zUFTkU9Z9P6_34bc9ba2643f803e5d529dd9c462ed94ce06e85d.jpg

Get a pair of vice grips and twist those weld on nuts off, they are probably too rusty to reuse.

I'd use a j nut and a regular bolt, make it easy.

If you have the replacement filler neck shield you may be able to remove the existing screws (that align with the holes in the shield) with a tool and technique such as can be found with a Google search on "broken screw extractor". Ideally this would leave the original threads to screw new fasteners.
    .
If that doesn't work, drill out the old screws leaving unthreaded holes and fasten with sheet metal screws of diameter slightly larger than the drilled holes. This may require enlarging the holes in the new/replacement filler neck shield. The heads of the sheet metal screws must be larger than the holes in the new/replacement filler neck shield.
    .
If you use the sheet metal screws, I see no need to have a threaded insert.
    .
Caution: when drilling or extracting near the fuel cap be careful not to ignite fuel fumes. Good luck!

I have a similar issue with a ‘98 and this thread is very helpful. FWIW the OE screws are # 90159-50339.
