Praying my warranty covers it

Maybe someone’s experienced this but I hope not. I lifted my truck 3F2B 285/70/17’s about 2 years ago. Shakes violently before and after shifting and down shifting. Took it to Toyota and of course it was the transmission. They have an adjuster coming out to look at it since it’s still under warranty but I’m praying they don’t say “yea son, it’s cause of the lift and big ass tires” I will cry. Anyone ever ran into this ?

oooof sorry man they're going to blame the lift and the tires. If they do take it to a transmission shop it'll be cheaper and probably fixed a lot better

 

It isn't out of the realm of probability that the tires are part or all of the cause, but it really depends on what the actual problem is. If they don't diagnose it and find what failed or is failing in the transmission then I don't see how they could blame anything, tires or not.

 

Pulled this from the warranty guide for the 2017 Tacoma on Toyota's site:

WHAT IS NOT COVERED
This warranty does not cover damage or failures resulting directly or indirectly from any of the following:
• Fire, accidents or theft
• Abuse or negligence
• Misuse — for example, racing or overloading
• Improper repairs
• Alteration or tampering, including installation of non-Genuine Toyota Accessories
• Lack of or improper maintenance, including use of fluids and fuel other than those specified in the Owner’s Manual
• Installation of non-Genuine Toyota Parts
• Airborne chemicals, tree sap, road debris (including stone chips), rail dust, salt, hail, floods, wind storms, lightning and other environmental conditions
• Water contamination

Probably not what you want to hear, but I think that 7th bullet covers your lift, unless it's a Genuine Toyota Lift.

EDIT: Page 31 also states in bold: Non-Genuine Toyota Parts, or any damage or failures resulting from their use, are not covered by any Toyota warranty.

 

Yes, but how do they determine that the non genuine parts are directly or indirectly the cause? The "indirectly" part seems like it leaves a lot of grey area. Anyway, without a specific diagnosis of the problem it's impossible to determine the cause.

Totally agree, there is room for interpretation. Let's be real though, it's probably the lift and tires that are causing the issue and these areas of the warranty guide are probably what the dealer is going to reference.

 

Depending on how full of shit they are maybe they’ll try to say the lift and tires caused it.. see what they throw at you and push back hard, unless they replace it that is

 

Why I will not be lifting my truck.....

....until my Toyota Platinum warranty expires on 7/31/2031

....at which point I'll be 70 if I make it that far. I'll probably need the Meso custom geriatric lowering kit by then!

 

Of course they will blame it on the lift and huge tires, and they probably are not wrong. Good luck brother!

IF the trans is the problem, and they blame the suspension/tires, ask why dealerships sell trucks with similar mods that they installed.

When they finish dancing that jig, ask them to explain, in writing (for your attorney's benefit) exactly how the suspension and tires have damaged the transmission.

 

That is one of the reasons I have held off lifting my truck. Good luck with the dealer.

 

Shoe on other foot, and how can you "prove" your parts didn't cause the issue? See it works both ways and because you are the one that modified the truck that gives the manufacturer an out.

This is why building relationships with the dealership can be so beneficial, many times a dealership will cover the expense out of their pocket or "manipulate" the warranty claim so that it goes through without scrutiny.

Um, no. The dealer denys warranty, you escalate to Toyota. They deny. You then go into litigation without your truck because, its evidence. You spend $$$$$ with lawyer to prove it's not the lift and tires. Toyota sends one of their 42,301 lawyers to prove it is lift and tires.
You spend $20K on a $3K claim and you win?
