"The accident occurred late on Jan. 1 more than 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) up Mount Velebit, that stretches along Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast. Rescuers say both man and dog — an Alaskan Malamute called North — slipped and fell about 150 meters (500 feet).

“(North) curled beside him and warmed him with his body,” the rescue service’s post said. “His loyalty didn’t stop even when the rescuers came, he was one of us, guarding his man for 13 hours.”"

I used to have an Akita. He was...special. He was something. Unforgettable. But, be prepared. He/she may be a handful.

    - Akitas can shed. Professionally. In the spring, Ruffy (short for Roughneck) could be brushed for 4 straight hours and the amount of hair would not slow down. Insane. Their coats are also hydrophobic, so be prepared to be wetter than them when you give baths. Also, shampoo doesn't rinse right out unless you're rinsing with a pressure washer, fire hose, or the Western Pacific Ocean.
    - Akitas are stubborn. Like, incredibly so. Early training is so very important.
    - Akitas a SMART. Crazy smart. A dangerous combination when added to stubborn. Consistency is key.
    - Akitas place themselves above children in the pack order. Make sure yours always knows the non-furry children come first.
    - Akitas are POSSESSIVE. Once they choose "their people" they can be resistant to "other people." Mine had issues with the pest guy, and thought all the tools the plumber brought into my house needed to be removed. He had to be put up whenever a stranger came around. Also, you'll never be allowed to poop alone, so make sure the door is closed when you try.
    - Their neck is wider than their head, so don't expect a collar to stay on if things get crazy. Ruff would take his collar off and put it back on all on his own. In fact, he got weird if you took his collar off - he WANTED it back on because it was HIS. Possessive, remember? Harness is best if you're walking a puppy, and as an adult the dog will likely be disciplined enough to heel.

    That said...

They are tough, funny, sweet (to their family), and massively loyal to their favorite humans. They may frustrate and annoy you, but they will love you to death.

I have a ton of stories about Ruff, and most are funny (like the time he accidentally knocked me unconscious). My fault - I thought we could roughhouse. My mistake. His skull was solid rock.

Anybody who hunts with their pup; recommendation for a hunting vest? Need something bright orange of course but beyond that I know nothing. Northeast area of the country so it will be cold/snow and hunting upland birds primarily.

There are a variety of different vests. Tactipup. Ray Allen. Gundog Supply. The first two are more "tactical" than hunting. Gundog Supply has been reliable in the past. And don't forget Chewy carries harnesses.

I peaked at Gundog Supply earlier and was surprised to see how many options there are with a huge price range. Hopefully somebody has a personal preference for a specific vest.

Buying online is hard. Different dogs have different body styles. Cabela’s/Bass Pro might have stuff you can try on.

We've been making some good progress with this guy. His aggression has come way down and even when he's in a bit of a fit we can usually redirect it to his favorite antler.

Now that it's "warmed" up and he can be outside longer than five minutes without shivering we've been able to work on his leash walking. He's a bit of a natural. Checks in with us and keeps his leash loose... Except when he sees he's on his way back to the house to see his foster brothers.

Still no applications to adopt him though. Five out of the eight in his litter have been adopted. Him and two others haven't recieed any interest yet.

Here are a few of the other dogs at the Humane Society.

    20220108_104704.jpg
    20220108_104909.jpg
Betty White. A very nice and well behaved husky mix that was found as a stray.

    20220108_102046.jpg
Sophie the Great Dane. She's been some work. She's been at the Humane Society for a while but this is the first time I've been able to get some photos. She really, really, doesn't like men and doesn't really trust new people of any gender. I've finally been able to get her to trust me enough to touch her. Now I can pet her and get her out for a walk. She's a big girl though. Holy. She was jumping through the snow the other day and jumped up on me. Her stomach hit my head and felt like a freight train.

    20220108_092500.jpg
Henry. A chihuahua mix. I'm not usually a fan of chihuahuas or little dogs but this guy is the best. Super friendly but will also play with his toys by himself with no issues.

    20220108_091611.jpg
Poor Barney. He was a stud at a backyard breeders. He has a ton of health issues, can't see well, has trouble breathing, lots of frostbite and has very little socialization. It seems he was neglected but thankfully doesn't seem abused. Despite his issues he's very friendly and just wants to play.
