One could argue that the tires do not create more strain on the transmission than towing a trailer. And the truck is rated over 6000lbs of towing. So unless the rotational mass of the tires exceeded 6000lbs of drag on the drivetrain there should be no issue.

Yeah, I made that point in a previous post. But who knows how that argument would go.

No need spend $20,000.00 in litigation, any decent attorney could resolve this for a $600 letter. Most dealerships are fine with up to like $5,000.00 in shut up money, or in this case, warranty repair.

Did alot of this work early out of law school because my only damned skills were knowing how to write, and cars. Got some people a lot of money on the power of a pen, and the desire of large companies to not get sued. They have to spend their own money to defend litigation, which is usually a $5,000 retainer. Knowledge is power.

OP should not have lifted his truck and expected warranty repairs on related components. TRD lift installed by dealer would have been the smart move. I'd much rather rep a client who could argue that the only thing he did was change tires.

im not following. they are covering their ass in the event that its not a warranty issue. I went through this with my wifes car and a defective AC condenser. I dont think its unreasonable.

    Oh look, another mod....
Here's a scenario that I think may help others:

I decide to buy a brand new house. It's your average house. But it's a pier-n-beam home. Not a house built on a slab or one with a basement. Since it's a pier-n-beam home it's raised slightly above the ground (lets throw out a number: 13 inches) so I can crawl around underneath it. But that isn't enough space for me, so I decide to raise the home (for various reasons, you can insert yours...).

Now the house is 36 inches off the ground. I paid to have it raised and I am very happy with the work. The house looks great! Years later I start to have cracks in my dry wall, my door start to stick and what's that? The floors are sagging? What's all this about?

Well, the added weight I put on the ground caused the foundation to sink, thus causing problems elsewhere in my house. Should I expect the guy who installed the lift on my house to pay for the repairs? No. Should I expect the realtor who sold me the house to pay for the repairs? No. Should I expect the builder who originally built my house to pay for the repairs? No.

The repair bill is mine. I altered something that was engineered to be a certain way. If I change it, the failures and costs are mine. All mine.

Moral of the story: If you want the warranty to remain in place, do not alter how the thing was built or designed. If you do, you're gonna pay.

To an extent. Changing to a size not recommended by the manufacturer and potentially destroying something because you put larger tires than recommended and then suggesting to change the tires back to the recommended size to hide the potential damage you caused due to larger tires...yes, that is fraud.

If you took your truck to the dealer and they intentionally put the wrong oil in it and the truck spins a bearing (say you are out of warranty) and you bring your truck back to the dealer and the service manager tells the tech to drain the oil and put the correct oil in the truck and then orders an oil analysis and tells you that you need to cover the cost of a new engine because they didn't do anything wrong...would you accept that? I would hope not. So why would you expect a company to sell you a truck, tell you the size tires you need to run, you intentionally disregard their requirements, you destroy something...and then foot the bill to fix what you broke?

You cause both of the issues and expect Toyota to pay to fix your mistake? Sounds like you're part of the reason people got legit warranty work denied.

Really it depends on how many miles are on the truck. Larger tires aren't going to add that much strain to the transmission or wear anything out much faster. Maybe his ATF was low from the factory like a lot were and never got filled, should Toyota be able to void his warranty over their fuckup by blaming it on his slightly larger tires?

I’m ignoring all the speculation and waiting for an update.

I have yet to read a post describing a real case where a warranty was denied because of lift. That’s not to say it hasn’t happened.

Me personally, I modify my vehicle assuming that it will not be covered under warranty. If something does happen and I decide to bring it in for warranty support I'll assume it's not covered but if it is so be it. If you want to be assured you vehicle will be under warranty then you CANNOT modify your vehicle beyond OEM recommendations.
