Story Time With Gritto

Dairy cows must bear calves regularly to keep giving milk.
Holstein cows are big, burly, belligerent gals, but sometimes they have trouble giving birth.
Usually because the calf is turned the wrong way, i.e. "breech birth".

I recall at least two occasions when I witnessed this happening.
My Dad kept close watch and if he saw the cow struggling and getting weaker, he was ready to help.
He'd reach in just about all the way to his armpit and work the calf around the right way.
As you might imagine, this can be a tiring business, but he was very strong.

On the first occasion, he got the calf turned and with him pulling, the cow was able to do the rest.
Not so the second time, as the cow was too weak by then (it was her first birth).
He ended up looping a length of baler twine around the calf's forelegs.
I got to help him pull on the twine.
It took some doing too.
Both cow and calf survived.

My Dad only called in a veterinarian for things he couldn't do himself.
And he could do a lot.
You might be surprised at the things a farmer needs to know.

My wife and I watch a lot of vet shows, Dr. Pol especially, they use a come-a-long and a chain to pull the calves out sometimes!

I really like it. But 6 years old and 85k miles.
For the same price I can get a top end brand new Outback, fully loaded with full factory warranty. It’s a tough choice.

Can't tell if it's reflections or beat to shit.

 

I saw an article the other day on inflation.
It said that new cars and trucks were going for almost 20% more than a year ago.
But get this, used vehicles were going for 37% more.
I may be way off on the figures there, but...quite a difference.

Personally, right now I'd go with a new Tacoma or 4Runner, and finance if I couldn't pay cash.
For what it's worth...
