Door sill paint coming off

My driver side door sills the paint is coming off, I bought some door sill protectors to put on to protect them from further damage. My question is should I paint the door sills first or could I just put the door sill protectors over the peeling paint without it rusting? I think it should be fine since it’s on the inside of the doors and won’t be out in the elements. Wanted to get different opinions. Here is a picture of the paint coming off.

 

The part of the sill is outside out the door seal so it will rust. My truck looks the same but worse, I'll need to have it painted.
It doesn't look like it's down to bare metal yet.

 

Just went out and double checked, when you close the door it will be inside of the cab, so it will be out of the elements. Not sure if it’s worth putting prime and touch up paint for something that’s inside the cab. Just not sure if it’ll rust eventually with a protector over it.

 

It might but like I said, the worn spot is outside of the seal.

 

I went right over mine without painting. I used to have the OE sill protector but they didn't wrap all the way down over the sill edge where the paint was worn. Went with this Sliplo STEProtect self adhesive which was 4" wide and came down over the edge. Fully covered the worn paint area and seems very durable.

Pick up your feet when getting in problem fixed. Maybe some bed liner in can would work well too.

 

Light sand, rust inhibitor like POR 15, prime, topcoat with color, then apply your guards

The area may not be visible door closed, but its outside the door seal, so it gets wet in the right conditions

 

I just recently purchased the truck, was like that from previous owners.

 

Yup I also didn’t go with the OEM ones because they don’t wrap around where the paints worn. I went with these

LOL, yup. I wore mine down to bare metal before I finally installed the running boards. While I lived somewhere that was dry it was never an issue. But then I moved to a wet location where they use salt on the roads in the winter and it immediately started to rust.

 

what you do to fix the rust on that spot?

 

Took it to a body shop. I also needed to have the new fuel door painted so I killed two birds with one stone. Didn't feel like messing with it myself.

 

Same issue here. Previous owner scratched the paint off the inner part of the threshold down to metal. Zero rust. I’m gonna just hit it with touch up paint the install a threshold cover over the top.

 

You might want to use some primer since yours down to bare metal before touch up. Mine was just down to the primer so I just put two coats of touch up paint and two coats of clear. It’s just drying up now. Make sure you disconnect your battery so your battery doesn’t die from leaving the door open for the paint to dry.

I also took the plastic trim off and touched up the part that was rusty from the plastic hitting the paint.

The best fix is to Install the 3rd Gen Door Sill Protectors on the 2nd Gen Tacoma. I bought the genuine 3rd Gen Toyota Door Sill Protector for my 2014 double cab on Amazon $48 and installed them myself for a perfect factory look and then added the colored stickers into the letters for totally awesome finish.

 

Those sill protectors just hide the rust. They do not stop it. Peel them off in a year or so and see what I mean.

The adhesive should seal the metal but unless you live in a desert like I do it wouldn't hurt to do some touchup paint. The oem door sill protectors are basically really thick stickers. Removing the old protectors required a heat gun and sticker removal solvent. Once I had a clean and dry surface I applied the new protectors which fold over the lip for improved protection with a beautiful oem fit and finish!

 

Does anyone happen have the OEM part number for the 3rd gen sill protector? Tnx in advance!
