Morning y'all. It's another lovely day here in the N.W. Atlanta burbs, although our sunny skies are about to give way to cloud cover for a few days and there's now the ubiquitous "hype" and "anxiety" being created by the weather guessers regarding the models and a possible winter-mix on Sunday. The 'meme' below shared by a friend sums it up pretty well... With daytime temps in the 40's and 50's before and after "the event" at worst we'd have a potential for icy roads on Monday morning, quite unlike the Snow Jam of 2014 where there was "suddenly" an unexpected snowfall even in the midst of a deep-freeze. How soon folks forget, but I'm sure the local TV News stations are getting a bump in their ratings by running this "potential" worst-case weather scenario.o_O

Anyway, as noted earlier (I don't think I've taken it down yet), Miss Debbie and I got out and enjoyed the weather yesterday afternoon, but her follow-up with the Ortho / X-ray appointment this afternoon will preclude a repeat today: bad timing. I've replaced a couple faucets over the past few months and one was a Pfister and another was a Moen, both were "better" but not "best" quality, but well-engineered and easy to install. One of the things I didn't anticipate "wearing-out and needing replacement" were the rear wheels/tread on our 10.5yr-old Honda HRX217 self-propelled mower. The left-rear is now "bald" and the right rear isn't far behind which had it slipping and sliding on the steeply banked front yard and dormant Bermuda grass this past week: 1st world problems, to be sure. So, a pair of replacements are on the way. Sadly, and unlike our trucks, my replacement choices were quite limited to just OEM direct replacements: no taller or wider tire options. ;)

That's about it. I've been busy shopping for "stuff" on line, so my OEM Toyota BacaRed touch-up paint should be here today so I can deal with several "nicks" from a POS dump truck hauling pea gravel on the interstate that I encountered on my drive home from PA a couple weeks back now, a handweight rack for Debbie's growing collection of the darn things that have been littering the floor of the home gym, there are some DVDs on the way -- I still need to ditch the dish, but Debbie's not comfortable with learning how streaming works -- to incllude all 8-seasons of the murder-mystery series "Castle" that she somehow sucked me into during the recent, evening marathons now that football season is nearing it's end. I guess turn-about is fair play, as I pulled-her into the "Last Man Standing" DVD collection during one of our "shut-out/shut-in" periods.

Thanks everyone! Clock is still ticking down...

The filter we have is a particulate filter. It doesn't change the taste or filter finely enough to do so. It just keeps the grit out, which keeps the valves clean, which helps them last longer. Filters are a buck apiece or so, I change them 1-2 times a year.

I disagree. Worst by far was the iodiotic navigation system. Can't navigate, can't see the tiny screen for the reflections on the windshield, voice recognition works like shit, can't understand names for dialing the phone, stupid location of buttons on the steering wheel change radio stations randomly, and I paid extra for this piece of junk. iPhone is a far better nav system anyway. Pull safely off the road and do it right.

Don’t like it but I can deal with TPMS. For me the worst most stupid thing on the newer Toyotas is when you come to a complete stop like at a traffic light and the system turns off the engine. Starts again when you take your foot off the brake. It just drives me absolutely nuts. I know there’s an override switch but I sometimes forget to push it. Anyway it just makes me crazy.

    Good morning fellow Porchatonians!!

I'm a Kohler man, personally. Bought all Kohler products when we built the house 18 years ago - replaced several cartridges over the years in the kitchen sink with all the use it gets but that's about it. Oh, one toilet seat, too.

Our well water is really hard up here so we have a whole-house water softener system. Changes the taste slightly but given the discussion above about plumbing I'm OK with the taste. And, in the winter I just throw 200lbs of water softener salt in the back of the truck and then use it up during the year in the softener.

I cleared our driveway after the 1-2 inches we had the other day so it wouldn't ice up. I am ready to get the snowblower out - and the plow - for Sunday's predicted deluge.

    Stay safe out there!!

I set all 5 tires exactly. If one trips the TPMS, and it's ~3lbs., it's a loose, defective valve core, or just seasonal changes. If it gets worse in an hour or two, it's a tire problem.
I like to keep the Taco shipshape. It's been a workhorse, and a reliable backup vehicle, which provides us a little peace of mind in an otherwise chaotic world.

You know the best part of that auto start system? The system has a start counter.
When it gets to so so many starts, it turns on the check engine light. If your in a inspection state, with emissions check, you FAIL. You have to get the starter replaced and then the system reset..
doesn’t matter if you have the option to turn it off.

The sun glare on my 09 Tacoma is out of control. Most of the time the radio screen is useless.

    Good to know.

Time to prepare for an upcoming winter weather this weekend.

My seated height is just exactly "wrong" to get reflection off the (white) hood. Bought a matte black 3M panel from "Crawlerado" and installed it. Brief adventure on a Saturday morning. After I found a decent recipe for the "snot" that is used by pro installers. Fits and works perfectly and doesn't cover the entire hood. Definitely worth the effort but I might be tempted to buy a piece of vinyl film and do my own thing another time.

The idiotic placement of the dash screen is another pain - and finally dealt with by installing a bit of garage door weather strip in the CD slot as a shade. Whatever works, right? I seldom have used the player so the slot was a handy install.

There are photos in my album.

I've got enough to worry about without expecting perfect tire pressures just to satisfy a light on my dash. The light is OCD... and I'm not. F**k that light.

    Morning all:

I had thought about doing the same, something similar to the TRD offroad which has the matte black section on the hood.
My one buddy is a sign painter and has the equipment to make any design out of vinyl, and the price would be right. :)

Yes, the truck was actually available as promised. So, today, we use it.

The WORST thing Toyota has done? Wanting to charge me annually for using equipment that I purchased with the RAV.
TPMS? Sure, when my normally 35 psi tire is at 28 psi, and you can't tell by the sidewalls anymore, I'll take it. I don't have the rest of the modern stuff on the Taco. And my sunscreen? Garden edging!

I'm confused on this Mike. Maybe there's something else to it. I've had 5 Prius in the family, the Niro hybrid, and now the RAV4. It's obviously part of a hybrid system, and that's pretty seamless. So, I assume adapted that to gas only. The whole concept is for mpg. I don't understand the counting, or why it would trigger the CEL? More to the story?

Toyota hybrid vehicles don’t use a starter to start the gas motor. They turn MG1 from a generator to a starter to spin the engine.
Non hybrid gas vehicles ,aka Tacoma’s , need a starter motor.
So in their infinite wisdom after so many start cycles they say it needs to be replaced.
Well, as long as it starts people would not replace it. The problem is if it screwed up after a normal motor start, when the motor shut off at a intersection, you would be dead in the water.
And the only way to let the cust know that it needs replacement is the check engine light.
You wouldn’t shut your car off normally on the road until you got somewhere off the highway.
Goes along with the stupidity of the rav 4 AWD being disabled if the check engine light comes in.

OK, now THAT technology leaves me wondering. Someone in software should be...um.... questioned!

And, all us curmudgeons, let's hear it for TPMS. Went to back the Adventures in Moving van into the drive this AM, and on the dash...

RIGHT FRONT TIRE PRES LOW. WARNING.

And you can't see it very much, but it was sitting on 40 psi of 80 psi cold fill! My poor little compressor gave it's all to get it up to that, but it did.

What cracks me up is I expect all these modern complaints from all of us. Those that remember the JOY of bias ply tires, and re-treads! And checking for a leak by spitting on the tire, uphill, against the wind, in -40* snowstorms! But on any given day, some youngster has just bought a modern truck, and they are aghast by "all this nanny tech" stuff it comes with!
