With 3rd gen Tacoma tuning, it is not used for flashing tunes. The ECM and TCM are in the tune, not seperate.
But for doing TSB updates (not supported yet) in Vftuner, there is an ECM and TCM calibration.

I gotcha. That explains why I haven’t seen much about it. Was there ever any details about that new ECU for 2018 AT’s?

    04a62?
I have not seen it on a truck yet, there is no TSB yet, and there is no VFtuner support yet.

Damn, that was October 2021! I think it was someone who got a replacement ECU in their truck. It’s a wonder we haven’t seen a TSB yet. Just like 04b05, we haven’t seen that TSB out yet either.
Thanks for finding that post. I did not remember it.

I remembered that you had run into a rogue 04A62 because I was anticipating having to update my 04A61 but thankfully, probably not.

Been almost a week on the tune. I’m more impressed everyday. Pulls slight hills locked in 6th gear and on a big hill kicks down to 5th Instead of 4th like the stock tune. This crushes my 2nd gen I’n every way. If you’re on the fence suck it up and get the tune. It’s literally a game changer!

Thank you @KH86 for tuning my Tacoma trd pro, today. If you are in the Bay Area of california or the surrounding area, you should hit him up! Truck is running great… noticeable difference.

So I’ve got a few hundred miles on my tune now and wanted to drop a quick review. This tune is an absolute game changer. The truck drives like a different vehicle. I used to constantly drive around in S mode because I felt like the truck could never figure out the gear it should be in. Since the tune I’ve just been running in D and have not once felt the need to shift into S to change gears. I’m running the Pro Normal tune…curious to try the Sport tune at some point but I really couldn’t be happier with Normal.

How's the get up and go on Normal? I'm too used to mashing the pedal currently so wonder if normal will suit my needs. I need to stop driving like a teenager but then again I want that powaaa!! Hah

Mine on normal and 33s has better pick up and go then when it was stock tune on stock tires with the ect button on. The tune completely changed the truck for the better.

I got my tune a few weeks ago into sport pedal mode.

My first impressions was “HELL YES”. Throttle response is super touchy and the low end power is there off the bat.. no more lag to get up and go.

I drive local mostly and now I want to change it to normal pedal mode because it is actually a lot more ideal for me. Normal pedal is a tad touchier than OEM per the 1st page, so I think I will be much happier. The sport pedal mode is just too much because its always on.

I am a spirited driver normally (why I choose sport pedal), but I think my age is getting to me cause I don’t drive like an asshole anymore cutting people off (with turn signals of course) and going vAAAAT everywhere.

To summarize, why I don’t like sport pedal mode is because:

1: It is touchy. In a good way when you wanna go, but in a bad way when you’re in plazas and also in a chill mood in stop and go traffic/lights (most of my driving).

2: I am going to try to explain my issue the best I can about the “lag” when you don’t want to drive sporty-in said parking lots, etc.

to not “jerk” the truck when hitting the accelerator with this sport pedal option, you have to ease onto the pedal just a tad bit in a sweet spot and wait for a very noticeable (lag) half second for the gears to switch so that you can proceed to press the pedal down more to accelerate slowly and smoothly in cautionary areas like parking lots. In this scenario, during the shifting from the lag, it feels rough. I just read about someone with transmission issues, even though it could be their lift and tires, but my main concern is that my truck is brand new and those shifts are unpleasantly rough when they do switch gears to ease down for “normal” driving. I am scared of long term issues if I keep it this way.

I am hoping that a normal pedal mode will fix my issue, giving me more play in the pedal to offset this gear change “lag”. I assume because sport mode is meant to be fast and touchy, but when you want to go slow in a parking lot, it has to “think” and re-gear to go slow. The major issue here is the gear changing feels rough.

This is my experience so far, but I am only on my 2nd tank(still near full) with the tune. It is recommended 1-2 tanks for the ecu to adjust). So, I will update my thoughts later on the tune when I have more time with it.

Conclusion: Sport mode is not ideal for me anymore because of the way that I drive (“safe” and patient) and I am worried about my transmission with these rough shifts on the low end.

1 more thing about the tune overall: I was going 70-75 mph and tried to gun it. There was a considerable amount of lag and lack of high end torque to accelerate. I found this to be super crappy if you are driving on the highway trying to dodge/pass/get in front of a car. I’m no expert, but I assume the tune gives you good low end, but kills off your high end. Just something to note with my experience and what I noticed so far.

Given that i drive mostly city, the tune is still worth it and I am sure I will enjoy it more in normal pedal mode. The gear hunting and lag from stock was horrendous.

This seems like the best spot to post - I've got a 2018 TRD OR DCLB. It's an automatic. Over time (I bought it new), I've been increasingly disenchanted with performance - especially hauling a full load of gear at altitude (>8000 ft). After months of research and fence-sitting, I reached out to @PapaRee who wrote me back immediately to remind me (in a kind way!!) of the first page of this thread so I could connect with a local tuner @Madmax702. Max is awesome! We connected via text last Friday and I got the tune done last Sunday. Max is amazing. Max was on time, clear in communications but not condescending in the least, and really helped me to understand what to expect and what he was doing to the truck. He updated the truck with the lastest TSB as well as the tune. I selected the mid-range or "normal" throttle setting. As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot I could tell a significant difference. Then I hit the freeway - per Max's suggestion I got the RPMs up... wow. I thought I was operating a Tacoma shaped F16!!!! So much fun. It's not my daily driver, but driving it again today... Oh boy. I might get a speeding ticket! I can't wait to load it for bear and head up high, and also to run more miles on it and watch for the continued performance/MPG changes.

In addition to the great performance upgrade, smooth shifting and NO gear hunting...this was just such a great experience. I truly appreciate Max's time and professionalism. I feel confident that if I have any kind of issue, he's got my back. (I'll cross post to the Vegas BS channel too).

I noticed this as well during the considerable highway driving I've done since getting the Pro tune. Jam the gas, big lag until the AT kicks down, then just kind of feels out of breath. Granted, these trucks are like putting a brick in a wind tunnel, but it shouldn't affect it as much as it seems to. Any reason this may be happening?
