Let me start by saying I know I should check these things after service, but nothing like this has happened to me before. After this I'll be checking religiously.

So I got my oil changed at the dealer for my final free Toyota service in Nov and when checking my air filter yesterday I noticed there was no oil cap. I immediately called the dealer and they say to bring it in.

Once there they say they've had a few that have come off (sounds like a bad tech to me) and that they'll put a new cap on it. After talking with them they do an oil change and send me on my way. Problem is, I'm not sure if the cap has been off for the whole 6k miles or had fallen off at some point in between the oil change and me checking my filter.

Surprisingly no oil came up through the tube so my oil level was not affected and I had no dash lights at all. Obviously I'm worried about water and dust getting down the oil filler tube. Anyone have advice of what I should do?

They left it off. I hope they paid for the cap. If no oil was lost then no worries.

You already did it by getting an oil change and a new cap. Nothing left to do.

Change the oil again at 500 miles to reduce the chances of contamination.

Do it yourself though to be extra sure .

As long as you don't see any engine oil all over the bay you should be fine.

Oil and a filter is about $30 to $40.
I would not trust that the dealership even changed the oil out again when you went in due to the missing cap.

Just buy some oil , filter , beer and tacos, sounds like a nice Saturday afternoon to me. :)

Thanks for the peace of mind everyone! Definitely the last time a dealer will be doing any oil changes.

When I do oil changes, I frequently place the oil cap on the battery or near the latch. Maybe it fell in a small corner of the engine compartment.

It’s the “quick disconnect” oil fill cap for that 5 extra horse power.

My dealership was the opposite….. my first and only time…too tight. They used pliers to the point where the plastic handle on the cap was bent over.

on my older vehicles, if i left the cap off, oil would fly everywhere almost instantly and you'd lose your oil pretty quickly. maybe it's different with these toyota engines but I'd be concerned about oil starvation issues.

I would have also had them change the oil. No way that cap came off on its own no matter how lose it was. They never put it back on. Everything will be fine but I’d still have the change the oil because it was their fault.
