I hate Push Start

Must have been a year change. My 2017 will only lock when touching the ridges. If you keep tapping the ridges after it's locked, it does nothing. I just walked out and tested this. The only way to unlock the truck is to grab the handle with multiple fingers (back side of handle loop).

 

Yeah the bags or whatever to shield the RF signal work, but if I have to constantly take the fob out of a bag just to open the door or start the engine, well, it totally defeats the purpose of having keyless entry/start. A key would be much easier to deal with. Also, instead of buying a bag, one can just "turn off" the fob, although I forget the formula. I think it is something like holding down the lock button until you see it blink, and then the fob is turned off until you hit the "unlock" button next time.

 

I get it. I only use mine when the truck is parked at home. When I leave the house I take it out of the bag, do all my driving, then put it back in the bag and on my key rack when I get home. Not so bad.

 

Press/Hold lock button, press unlock button twice. You'll see your remote light flash twice.

Unfortunately, this disables the touch door handle, as now you have to press any button on the remote to unlock.

 

Yup, tap the ridges to lock -- touch the handle to unlock. But if I have the key in my pocket while I'm washing it, just the hose water on the door handle will unlock it which makes me think the unlock sensor in the handle is thermal not pressure. I can also lay a single finger on the door handle and most of the time it will unlock, not really needing a firm grip.

Also, if you unlock it with the fob (or hose water as noted) but don't open the door within 60 or 90 seconds (I can't remember the exact amount of time) it will re-lock itself. My 2021 Tacoma, my 2016 RAV4, and my 2010 Prius all worked exactly this way. In my experience, that is the only time the vehicle will automatically lock itself.

Going all the way back to my 2010 Prius, I've always really trusted the Toyota system as it makes it exceedingly difficult to lock your keys in your car. As far as I know*, Toyota doesn't offer an automatic "walk away" self-lock like GM, Honda, and some others do. That was the first thing I turned off in my Civic, I really dislike it.

Even my 2005 tacoma with traditional keyless entry will relock itself after 30 seconds if I unlock it but don’t open a door.

 

Yeah I did this for a while but every time I did, I'd forget walk up to the truck either nearly yank the handle off or nearly throw my back out opening the door.

 

Shouldn't there be a key fob app for our phones by now? I'd really like to eliminate the key, the fob, and my wallet and just carry a phone but no key fob app that I am aware of and google pay and apple pay don't work everywhere yet so still have to carry these things around. Honestly, those two should be standard by now and the phone should be a stand alone watch with a projected screen or roll up screen. Tech advancements are taking too long. Five years ago I thought these ideas would be common by now. WTH? While we're at it, why aren't our vehicles flying yet?

Nope, Jeep Wrangler has not had it for years, makes it really easy to flat tow.

 

I love technology and generally embrace it, but there's already too much shit dependent on my phone. The last thing I want is to not have a key (fob) or a wallet, when my phone battery dies.

 

With the Lincoln system you have a PIN backup you can use to open and start the car if your phone dies or is lost.

 

I'm with you. There was a guy who checked oil well equipment, drove his Tesla EV out to the field where there wasn't any cell phone service, and got locked out. So the story was relayed to me. If you think about all the places Tacomas are taken, that could become a real problem.

 

Think they made up a story to tell you... Per the Tesla page it uses bluetooth and doesn't require cell service.

As you approach, your phone's Bluetooth signal is detected and doors unlock when you press a door handle. Once a phone has been authenticated, it no longer requires an internet connection to be used as a phone key for Model 3.

Not sure if it's the same issue, but I know older gen iPhones (until the most recent gens) were not capable of Bluetooth pairing with Supra boxes, which we use in the Wireless industry. You had to get a special dongle to pair with the phone and the Supra box, that acted as a sort of middle man. Huge pain in the ass for those site techs with iPhones.

 

Yeah I really miss jerking the steering wheel with one hand and turning the key with the other only to have to jiggle the key around to unlock the key cylinder because it's gotten touchy with age. Getting in a just pushing a button sucks.

I don't get the PTS hate. Hell, I haven't carried any keys of any kind in years, remote access to my house through my phone or electronic keypad and Lexus key card in my wallet makes life good IMO. Just less stuff to tote around.
