Would a TRD cat back exhaust from a 3rd gen work on a 2nd gen?

I just bought a used 2006 with stock exhaust, and used to own a 2014 with the TRD cat back exhaust, and I loved it. I want to put a catback on my 2006 and found a used 3rd gen catback for sale for $75 versus the $400 it'll cost for a new 2nd gen one.

Does anyone know if the 3rd gen cat back would work on a 2nd gen? Anyone have experience with this?

My 2006 is also an access cab, whereas the catback i'm looking at came off a 2018 DCSB

    Short answer, no.

Long answer, considering it’s a different engine, different truck, no but, a muffler shop could make it fit. But, it would be like making an entire cat back from scratch except your going to use a used muffler, cut the pipes, flanges, and hangers off, chop up the pipes, weld them all back together adding pieces as needed. Now it would fit, look like hell, and be prone to failure due to the extra welds all over the place, and probably perform worse than stock, and end up costing more than buying a new one already made.

Unless the guys at Toyota who made the exhaust pipes were in some overdrive bonus mode and at the end of the second generation ended up with an extreme overstock abundance of exhaust systems and Toyota wanted to design the third generation around fitting them. I’d say this is pretty unlikely.

Is it possible, yes, but it will not be a direct fit, as other posters have mentioned there will need to be custom work done. I would save up for the 2nd Gen specific model. I’m with you, I have one and I love it as well.

    Shop around on https://parts.toyota.com/.
some vendors are selling them cheaper than others. This one is for an access cab/dcsb.

Dont know how much longer xtra cab exhaust is compared to double cab but I put 2016 on my 2010 . Need to splice your front onto 3rd gen one (since yours longer should work) and rear exhaust hanger needs to be bent to fit yours . There is a exhaust rubber hanger that works but dont have part # .

Is it just the forward flange that has a different rotation? That’s what it looks like in those pictures. If I recall the TRD exhaust is the same part number for Access Cabs as the DCSB since it’s the same wheel base. I’m curious about this as well since I have seen TRD exhaust systems come up for sale in my area as well for DCLB’s which is what I have.

The 3rd gen is shorter in length front part . This pics 3rd gen compared to 2nd gen Trd exhaust . You can see 3rd gen shorter .Muffler is same .Just that this pic (got it off TW ) muffler is the TRD perfomance muffler .
Some were on here someone posted rubber insulator (hanger ) that works for rear hanger . If not just need to twist 45 or 90 degree or weld on new hanger .

I used sleeve on inside to splice but good quality band clamp should be strong enough .

Looks to be far simpler than I expected. You could find a sleeve that fits outside instead of inside, so you don’t lose flow to the inner sleeve. I’d suggest to find a place that will quote you an estimated cost to make the necessary modifications before you buy it, a trustworthy place. If you already have the part in hand, they’ll figure your stuck with paying to modify, and may try to charge more. Look around and make sure they have a mig, vs just a torch.

Or heck, you could cut it, stick in a pipe and 2 band clamps yourself.

That TRd cat back might be for a DCLB. Looks really freaking long.

To me just a good band clamp is good enough . Just cut and join . I just put the sleeve.... because lol
Could have welded but my prerunner is lowered  so being able to split makes it easier for me if I need to take exhaust off .

This is the hanger needed so no bending needed for rear hanger (tail pipe )

What size butt clamp did you use? Seems like folks are split on these forums about 2.25” vs 2.5” stock exhaust sizes.

Been awhile but I believe its 2.25 . The exhaust tip is 2.5 and goes down to 2.25

Can someone confirm the proper band clamp is 2.25”? I just put one on and it looks way too small but the 2.5” is too big and won’t compress. Maybe I got sent 2” when I ordered 2.25” but the box says 2.25. I could barely get the bolts to this point since it was already a stretch to get the bolt holes to align.
I’m trying to make sure this will work before tearing off my catback in case I need to run out to the store again.
Thanks for any help. I’ve never used these kinds of clamps before so any experience is welcomed.

I don’t think the stock piping is a standard 2.25 or 2.5. After all, the truck is Japanese. Doesn’t really make sense for the piping to be a US standard. I mean, the bolts are all metric, not standard, right? In Japan one of the standard sizes for exhaust piping is 60mm (2.36”) and I suspect that’s what we have on our trucks.

I recently hacked up a stock exhaust as well as a TRD one and had to add some length to get it to fit my truck. The piping was just a tiny bit smaller than some standard 2.5” stainless piping I had laying around leftover from a previous exhaust project. The Toyota piping, after a quick sanding to clean up the surface was just barely small enough to slip INTO the standard 2.5” piping.

Thinking back when I did this it was a little tight . I believe I squeezed it together enough so I could thread and tighten down clamp.

Old thread, going to be doing this. Thinking of cutting off the end off my old exhaust where it flares up in size to use as a coupler. I’d weld it to the end of the 3rd gen exhaust and then clamp it to the cut I make on the 2nd gen piece that’s left. Either that or try to use one of those pipe expanders but I’m pretty sure they’re junk. Thoughts?
