Nice! What kind of mpg do you get while towing that setup (compared to what you normally get)?

I currently have a rooftop tent, but would love to switch over to a trailer for my annual cross-country riding/camping trips. I currently average about 15-16 mpg with the RTT and 33" tires, so I'm very worried about how big a hit it might be with something like your trailer. Any info/data would be much appreciated.

For those that have raced mountain bikes before, what's the difference between registering for men's open and amateur men's age group? Is one less competitive? I'm eligible to sign up for amateur men's 30-39 this year

 

I guess it depends. the open would be for all ages so you'll have a wide variety.
amateur would just place you within your own age group so it could be less or more competitive. You'll at least be able to compare yourself officially against folks your age.

 

In some places "Open" is those without a race licence or are racing on a day licence. Usually new racers or those that rarely race. Can be a wide spread of speed and talent.

 

Here in Colorado, for most amateur racing, Open typically refers to the “Pro” class

im looking at the revolution enduro glorietta race in may. any of the revolution races would be fun though

You’ll want to race Amateur Men 30-39. Good luck, I’ve heard the Revolution Enduros are fun and more laid back than BME.

 

Man US racing confuses me. Ha. We call it Elite here and don't really have Pro/Am categories. Pros would just race Elite or Cat 1 on the road with the amateurs.

 

Depending on your skill level and being your 1st race you might even consider the men's beginner class for you age group. If you ride a lot and are in good shape then consider the amateur class in your age group. Most people start in the beginner class for their 1st race, then if you do well move up to the amateur class.

Probably the best thing to do is contact the promoter and ask them.

 

Just don't be that guy in the beginner class. The sandbagger with faster times than half the amateur class

Last in pros - without question. Then you can at least say you race Pro Class

AMEN. Last fall I went out to one of the local cyclocross races and entered the beginners race on my trailbike and baggy shorts. I got fifth overall... second among those who hadn't raced Cat1/2/3 earlier in the day. Everyone on the beginners podium was wearing a f***ing skinsuit.

My biggest fear as an avid mountain biker is that new riders will show up to a race, have this same experience, and get discouraged on biking in general. This bulls*** is the opposite of everything that is awesome about biking.

 

I love racing in the Clydesdale class for that reason. All the skinny pro dudes don't meet the weight requirement
