I tried to change my oil and filter this afternoon the dealership did it in July at 10,000 miles. I now Can't get the thing off. I just decided to stop before I broke it. I was using the motiveX cap wrench with a 27mm socket and big half inch ratchet. Last time I changed it at 5,000 miles I was able to get everything done no problem with those tools.

Being it was getting dark and colder. Also that I don't have a garage and need the truck tomorrow. I just filled it up with new oil and ran the engine for a while to check for leaks. Everything seems good but how in the world am I going to get the filter off later?
Can I just get the filter off later or have a shop change it with out loosing much oil? It looks like the filter housing is part of the oil cooler so it should be higher than the oil pan and possible with out loosing all the oil.

The Dealerships want to gorilla tighten those filter housings for some reason.

It's the plastic cap that you reuse not a metal can one can't do that.

Tell me about it. I had to even use a set of pliers to break the fill cap loose the went incredible hulk on that too.

Dealer overtightened the filter cap/canister. Very common. I would be ready to buy another one, if the one you have breaks.

Having a nice oil filter tool that fits snug is important. Which tool are you using?

Edit and make sure to torque to only 18 ft lbs.

I have the previous version of the motiveX cap wrench. The one with the cut outs for the tabs. It worked perfectly the last time. This time when I pull on the thing it slipped off. I put the cap wrench on used a 27mm socket and half inch rachet.

I tried a few times then decided to stop before I broke it. Plus I was loosing sun light.

Yeah the thing is how is the best way to get it off and is it actually possible like I think to just change the filter with out dumping all the oil again?

I have a metal cap to replace it on standby but at this point I can't work on it anymore for now.

I have done that to older cars in the past. But not with this cartridge filter/canister type.

These housings have a ton of seal drag.

The best way is to use a 1/2" breaker bar that is at least 18" or longer. Go SLOW and keep the torque steady/even when unthreading.

    That sucks!
I would go back to the dealer and have them break it loose.
Have them re-tighten it to correct specs so you can go back home and do it yourself.
They should supply you with a new filter, oil and a new canister.
Then I would never go back to them again.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Wait till it cools down a bit. Can you take a picture of how far past the retainer tab your cannister is? Mine ended up between the three tabs and following single tab at 18 ft-lbs.

I have not bothered with toyotacare changes and mine has come off without issues. At first change, taking off the filter drain plug started to rotate the cannister so was not torqued tight from factory.

Edit: bad shot but gives you an idea:

I have this copy cat https://www.amazon.com/Tool-Guy-Rep...x=toyota+tacoma+oil+filter+wr,aps,104&sr=8-14

    Works great

I spoke to a Toyota service advisor about this before. My dealer said they have a special instructions for their techs not to over tighten them because they have ran into a lot of those issues, breaking filter housing etc.

That makes a lot of sense. I think I have a breaker bar like that.
I'm thinking about not going back now. This was not an issue when it was done by me after it was new.
