The new Airbus A220 showed up to our hanger yesterday!

 

Airplanes but also understand balloons,gliders etc as well….

Got to fly on one headed to my parents place for Christmas. Was a pretty nice ride.

I worked at a machine shop that made the doors from raw metal amongst other things for those right before Airbus took over the airframe from Bombardier, so it's cool I got to go full circle.

 

It still wouldn’t fit if the doors were open as wide as they would go!

 

Been watching a lot of in depth aviation disaster videos and something that came into my thoughts was why no provision for attachment points for progressive series of parachutes to be remotely attached by boom from a military plane in the even of a hijacking, pilot death (private jet), or other circumstances making a craft not able to land or ditch relatively safely but can maintain altitude long enough to be rescued. Has anything like this ever been tested?

 

Those exact circumstances would be so exceedingly rare that it sounds like a huge waste of time and money to even start thinking about it.

 

I hear you and realize that the content I've been watching is covering 4-5 decades worth of flights, but at the same time a lot of provisions were created for specific situations that reinforcing the hull in certain areas seems like it wouldn't be incredibly challenging - that said if it hasn't happened yet, it's likely it's been thought about and found not to be feasible. Who knows, maybe with the composite hulled craft they may make something...

 

This idea goes around on social media periodically with a meme showing the passenger compartment hanging from silk while the rest of the plane is destined for a fiery wreck somewhere else.

Here's the problem, you now have not one but two a large pieces of debris falling from the sky in uncontrolled fashion.

As mentioned by another poster, that sort of event would be statistically nil almost zero, so a wasted effort developing and maintaining such a system.

Also, once this is under canopy - what is the mechanism or means to recover this and still land gracefully without injuring or killing the passengers inside?

 

Yeah I am thinking of arresting the vehicle all in one piece. One or two parachutes that open in stages and some kind of flexible yet rigid cover to stall out the engines or encrypted systems for remotely controlling autopilot parameters from a fighter (also dump fuel).

I could think of at least one event where this would have come in handy 21 years ago *if it existed*.

 

And since that event, the industry has developed ground and airborne based security measures to prevent that from happening. The threat is identified and captured at the terminal before the aircraft ever takes off. Metal detectors, luggage screening, no fly lists, TSA, and if it isn't discovered prior to departure - locked flight decks, Federal Air Marshalls and a list of other behind the scenes measures...

 

It exists for small civil planes but as weight goes up parachutes lose effectiveness quickly.

And such mishaps are so rare it’s not worth the money for a commercial enterprise to develop something that is safe and reliable.

 

Yeah I started thinking about it and it seems more likely to happen in other parts of the world.

I think that's the thing you're mostly saying in here. It's probably it could work with enough R&D backing it, but never worth the cost. Logical.

 

Some new planes can now land themselves in an emergency. Pilots dies, someone just pushes the button and the planes lands at the nearest airport.

 

I had been thinking about that, obviously unmanned craft have enough technology to be flown with incredible accuracy, but they're craft designed to be piloted remotely and smaller than any commercial plane. I guess it's only a matter of time before someone could punch in and fly it even if it's capable of landing itself in the event of extenuating circumstances making human reasoning more important.

 

The amount of tech they added to an F/A-18 to allow it to land itself is remarkably little. Most big new commercial planes only have pilots for when the autopilot doesn’t work right and cause the FAA requires them.

 

And the little parts that involve taxiing into and out of terminals and takeoff and landing the thing. No big deal though.

 

Last Operational flight was today for the CC-115 Buffalo - only remaining units were assigned to Search & Rescue duties in BC mountain terrain, flying out of Comox, BC with 442 Squadron. Replaced by Airbus CC-295.
