Loose shackles

Fortunately, here in the PNW, despite being wet all year round, we don't get a lot of rust. However, now that they started salting the road for snow days (this was the first year of it), that may change.

 

Salt or not, I’m surprised a shackle would not rust if left out in wet conditions. Perhaps your shackle is made of corrosion resistant steel or you consistently put some sort of corrosion protectant on it? My shackles definitely will rust after one night being left outside with just dew. I’m taking mostly about the threads that are not protected by paint.

 

I made the same mistake with shackles and ratchet straps... Straight into the trash they went. Now I keep a water proof 50 cal ammo can in the back with that stuff in it.

 

Yeah ordered a Greenlane bumper as well, and got a pair of red shackles to reduce rattling. Will confirm this once I get the bumper installed.

 

Thanks for the callout Bert, but I was talking about the welded shackle loop, not the silly tow loop that comes with the truck:


I only use that stock tow loop to hold my winch rope end as I travel. My bad for not being clear…post updated

My shackles were a whopping $10 each. They're black on black, and don't move around with the isolators. It was a tough decision, but considering the lack of storage in the cab, and that I have two extra D-rings, plus soft shackles too,

Calle me a weirdo, but I decided to take the $20 risk and leave them on.

We were in Cali at the time (South Lake), but the state line was just a few blocks away... Those gals were putting their best clothes and makup on (if ya know what I mean), getting ready for something at 11 AM. The bull bar and light bar make for a quick getaway

 

Everybody in my town leaves their shackles on, seems like anyways? I guess I never really thought about it, just seemed like the thing to do. Ya could be out mowing the lawn and get a text from the neighbor needing a desert rescue.

As much as I'd love getting roasted on TW, I wasn't planning on running the shackles around town...but all jokes aside seeing how loose they fit not only irks me at the thought of all the clanging but also makes me wonder how stable/effective they'd be in a recovery. Obviously it's not gonna explode, but over time poorly fitted metal connections always wear each other out...or is this a pretty normal thing in the world of shackles?

 

You should check out the flatlink shackles and soft shackles. The Australians have been using them for years. You'll find plenty of videos on YouTube about using them.
