The only thing I like about EV is the massive torque. You know…. The one thing the Tacoma is missing a bit of.

I am also worried about gas when it’ll start costing upwards of $10 per gallon. Esp living in CA. They are trying to stop the sale of gasoline vehicles in 2030 here…

This is the argument I make in defense of Toyota and their preference for fuel cell vehicles. While battery powered EV's will work (well) for a lot of the 1st world urban areas, Toyota is a manufacturer of vehicles used around the globe and they understand that EV support infrastructure is something that will be out of reach for many poor parts of the world for the foreseeable future.

Not matter how cool EV's look, petroleum & hydrogen fuel cell based vehicles will be the vehicles of choice in these (often remote) parts of the world. I feel like the hype behind EV's is blown out of proportion by people who haven't been to the "less fortunate" parts of the globe where installing EV infrastructure will probably not happen in the next 20-40 years.

Toyota is way behind? I have seen exactly ZERO EV trucks on the road, from any brand.

Posts like this make me laugh. Totally clueless. You obviously have no experience with EV's. I've never seen such ignorant people about EV's. Entire ecosystems gone each month? wow, we will be dead in no time. There are lots of places to charge them and you get a lot more than 200 miles per charge and each charge is not for hours, more like 20 minutes.

I too hated the idea of the EV until I pulled my head out, drove one and learned the facts not internet BS.

I've had the same thoughts, but for smaller vehicles, (motorcycles). The issue I see with automobiles is the size / weight of the batteries. They're a little harder to maneuver than a gas pump or can.

The frame flex issue mentioned above seems fixable.

My other idea: Have options for solar panels on the roof / hood and some sort of generator for long trips, etc. There some interesting developments in micro turbines. I know the panels don't produce much, but if the vehicle is in the sun all day, why not use it?

Are you intentionally completely ignoring the aforementioned inability to use solar panels in some parts of the world for the majority of the year? we already said "there are ways".. they are not affordable for most people and most of them still require all the crude materials to BUILD them, ship them, etc etc... Sure, where there is a will, there is a way. Again, it doesn't start with the consumer here. When cargo planes, boats, nasa rockets, trains, entire power grids etc etc start using it, then we can talk about the ridiculous price they cost and the ridiculous cost of maintenance. Go fix your coolant leak.

No money, all went to truck...
that's a good point. Lots of hype for the ev trucks and none on the market.

I think electric is probably OK but there are a lot of considerations.

In Hawaii electricity is so expensive (4-5 times compared to other states) there isn't a lot of savings unless you have a large solar system on your house pushing out a large surplus (which most houses don't have because the utility doesn't allow extra large solar systems).

Hawaii still burns coal to make some of its electricity. So yeah, I'll charge my EV truck but it's using electricity that was generated by burning coal or fuel.

The Kentucky tornados are showing some other issues with electric cars that some never even thought of. Even those with electric chainsaw are bumming.

I still think hybrids are the way to go at this point. Not until there are improvements to everything including how we generate electricity...

There seems to be a bit of an attitude in this thread that those who do not like EVs are ignorant luddites. I suspect most of us have looked at the EV truck options, and car options, and weigh pros and cons. I doubt those of us who are seeing trouble w EVs are ignorant.
To that point a few things to read :
    EV eco damage
    https://www.wired.co.uk/article/lithium-batteries-environment-impact

Building charging stations in the Wilderness for EVs- eco friendly?
    https://www.forbes.com/wheels/features/charging-in-the-wilderness/?amp

Bringing along a generator to charge their VW EV?
    https://www.motorbiscuit.com/volkswagen-id-4-first-production-ev-sling-baja-dirt-mexican-1000/?amp

Now I HATE the Cannonball run- I think someone will die from this stupidity. But, using the data already available compare the EV time to gas time:
    https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/amp38095522/ev-cannonball-record-tesla-model-s/

    https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cu...rd-broken-25-hours-39-minutes-from-nyc-to-la/

The gap is charging time, on basically a 2500 mile race . I suspect the speed of the cars is about equal. Again- just using the data, not promoting this stupidity of the effort.

Compare the best of the best -f1 vs formula E.
    https://www.silverstonemuseum.co.uk.../blog/formula-1-vs-formula-e-which-is-faster/

EVs have some benefits to be sure, but one has to compromise convenience and performance . Plus not everyone will have a garage to charge. Solar charging is cute but I’ve ran a Jackery setup on camping trips for a fridge several times. The reality is you need a really big solar footprint or keep moving your panels to make it work. On a clear day.

In the short term I may buy an EV for a run around town car, but that wasn’t the OPs original post. His post was opinions on an EV Tacoma. I suspect some of us use our trucks for the occasional long distance escape . I just don’t see an EV truck working for that, but if you are a tradesman who uses it for work then it makes more sense. Fuel cell or hybrid Tacoma makes more sense if I had to make a choice.

see- those of us against truck EVs really do know how to read.

One day, they will probably make solar panels mounted on at car with enough efficiency to power a it indefinitely. not in my lifetime, but some day.
I like the idea of renewable energy. I really like (selfishly) the idea of not having to depend on the grid for power. I am also a gas powered vehicle lover. No EV will ever make me grin like the sound of a race engine. I am just a little to practical to think we are at the point of this all being widely used.

Just curious , your “experience” with EVs or solar is first had ? Or maybe just extrapolating numbers the internet provided in some blog or YouTube video?
Have you driven in a ev at all (like ever in your life) ? I mean, you would think someone would be so entrenched about how dumb an EV is after owning one and seeing how terrible it was for them. For example if you got a tesla and the battery crapped out on you , it would be like “oh yeah I’d be pissed too if that happened to me in real life”

also you say “some parts” of the world. Just curious when you have been ? I mean I’ve been here and there (euro , Asia , Americas ) and I can tell you breathing in air in 3rd world places from all the gas cars is like breathing in pure death. Maybe way out in the middle
of no where you blissfully think there is zero
issue with pollutants building up in packed city streets (especially in shitty places with zero smog rules or enforcement).
Maybe travel somewhere close , like Mexico and let us know what you think about the air quality .
Or maybe rent an EV on turo or so? then maybe it will make more sense what you’re saying. You maybe could actually say “what i hatted most about X, Y Z after actually driving one was … “. I mean yeh speculations and the internet is cool , but also first hand real life knowledge is also important ya ?

Hummm so far I gather the anti EV logic is as follows:

“ EVs are shit, because they are no good in the arctic circle if you need to drive 600 miles a day , every day”

I suppose in that niche condition yeah they’re shitty….

someone can just as easily point out way worse reasons for drilling petroleum out of the earth then burning it .

Also, do you know someone with out a garage that said owning an EV was horrible and they wish they can go back ? I am aware of 2 ppl who do not charge at home (They charge at work or at public charging stations near places they frequent often), and they all say it’s not convenient but still much better than filling up a gas car. If the vast majority of EV owners, say they would never go back , what does that say?
Look at “Plug Share” or google maps for ev chargers near me , and see how many places have them (some are even free too)

common theme I’m seeing here so far . Zero first-hand experience. Relying on Internet information.

i would take Someone’s first hand negative experience any day over all the speculation.

Bruh, I was military. I've seen "3rd world". I lost a fucken leg in one country. I'm not talking about air quality anywhere, I'm talking about cloud coverage, rain, snow, daylight savings time etc etc. Wtf are you even rambling about at this point? I never said any of the dumb shit you are talking about.

Go back to reddit. This aint it.

For someone who pulled their head out, I'd expect a more broken down and educated response than that. You literally addressed nothing I mentioned. Go look at what those mines are doing, yea they are destroying the land and poisoning waters. But ok, Im Mr. Clueless.

Batteries are like fluids, all have a useful life. 10 years isn’t bad given the extreme cold of dude’s place of residence. He should have put a dummy in the driver’s seat with his own likeness. Has no one to blame but himself for not considering the total cost of owning a Tesla.
