There are some stealerships that install monitoring systems on their vehicles. They usually mess with something else too in the process. I don't know the dealer you are mentioning, but just to clarify, is there any system on your truck to where they can track you and disable it if you miss payments? Sometimes they even work around mentioning it and people find black boxes on their vehicles spliced into wiring... Granted, it's in the paperwork, but not everyone pays attention when signing these things. Not saying you didn't or anything. Just trying to help get a solution here.

 

I did, right in the OP you tell them to delete an option on your truck you didn’t like. It ended up deleting other options you want. It’s not their responsibility to educate you on your decision. You didn’t have answers, and neither did they, they did what you asked.

 

I do not know the answer to your specific question. But, at least one person has posted that their truck is the same way, so this doesn't seem to be a unique situation. Since I already stepped briefly into this shit show, I'll throw this out there: It is entirely possible that the dealer is using the same information that you are from the TSB which seems to imply that constant speed control would still work after the procedure. That information from Toyota could be incorrect, in which case Toyota is (likely unintentionally) misleading their dealers and ultimately some customers.

If this is the case, then the dealer should have a leg to stand on with corporate if you want to have the system put back to the way it was (give the dealer the replacement part for free or some kind of credit). HOWEVER, the TSB states in Step 1 to validate that there are modifications to the vehicle that might interrupt the function of the radar. If you do not have any mods, then the dealer should not have continued with the TSB, so Toyota may push back on the dealer if that is the case.

This is likely an oversight on the TSB details, and the dealer has no way to know how to get it working again without reversing the procedure unless corporate helps them in some way.

Either way, you did not receive what you were promised, and the misleading information came from the Toyota TSB. This should be for the dealer to work out directly with Toyota, and they need to get a field tech out to fix it or put you back the way you were and deal with Toyota for the cost of the part. It's that simple, and that's what you need to convince the service manager of.

I think the manual states that you have to be going over 25mph/40kph for cruise to work, just in case you've only tried it while sitting still. Although, I think that just pertains to setting a speed, not turning cruise on.

Editorial note: I'm a little surprised that the mod actually bricks the radar firmware, but it does say "permanently disable" in the TSB. That's pretty permanent. There are likely much easier ways to disable this just with an ECU update to bypass the option, but I am assuming a lawyer got involved and said that would leave it open to be re-enabled and likely pose some liability. This is what happens when people blame others for their own behavior. Like government requirements for automated safety features.

 

As it turns out, CSCC does work if you engage it before you hit 20 MPH. Or so. After that you get the pop up to go see the dealer and nothing you can do will change it. The speeds at which cc will engage varies depending on whether its CS or radar. I think radar was 28 mph and CS is 25. So ...
Bottom line is i can live with it as long as it continues to function and I simply have to remember to turn it on before i start rolling. This really indicates that the dealer does not understand these systems very well. No doubt they are complicated. However the TSP is pretty detailed as to the steps involved. Ultimately it was their responsibility to verify cs works when they are done. Which they did not and insisted cs would not work. I can only think the tech and dealer are not up to speed. This does not bode well for a vehicle that relies on electronics heavily. One can only hope Toyota did it right to begin with. Generally have faith that they did, still shit fails, usually at the most inopportune time and can only hope the dealer can make the repairs. To date they have failed that test, miserably.
If I had it to do over I would have left it alone, I had no idea it would turn out this way. Realistically the dealer should have stated as much, but then apparently they are over their head.

I put in an aftermarket grill and had a shop fab a custom mount for the sensor and they were able to get it calibrated with my lift, different sensor position, etc. It worked fine on the pavement, but it was way more prone to throwing the clean sensor message anytime I took it in dusty conditions. I even had a smoked plexigless cover for it. I just got tired of it.

I had no idea about the TSB or the impact to the radar until after the fact. I found all that out via this site. I printed out the TSB and took it to the dealer, and they said they couldn't guarantee it due to my mods. Here is a picture of my setup with red arrow pointing to custom sensor mount.



I've just accepted the fact that I don't have Cruise Control now. If I really want it back, it will cost me $700 at the dealer. Lesson learned. Hopefully this will help somebody else contemplating this.

 

Have you tried turning in out right after you start the engine? Hold it in as if you were engaging constant speed cc

 

Yep I tried everything. I even pulled up the thread when this came up when I posted about it and was showing the technician and he tried everything along with me. It just flat out does not work

 

Great looking truck! I'm wondering if the grill material is confusing the sensor -- OEM does have some plastic in the way, but yours appears to be metal and might have a different effect on the sensor. I've been in the back of the line on lots of dusty roads and never get the message -- the only time I have gotten it is driving through freezing rain and snow when it got ice buildup everywhere.
