Couldn't getOil filter to come off

I work on several Tacomas a week. I am the opposite. I recommend the original set up including plastic housing. Just have to torque it correctly (18ft lbs) and it comes off with ease. Dumb lube mechanics at the dealer overtighten them, leading to owners upset that it can't be removed easily.

Explain to me how 3rd gen tacoma's vertically hang filter assembly on the bottom of the engine causing a drain back...

 

On my first self oil change, I used that same motivx oil filter wrench and couldn't get it off by hand. I hooked up an impact wrench and it loosened up with just one ugga dugga, then removed it by the hand the rest of the way.

Replaced the plastic housing with an aluminum one, and torqued to 18ish ft/lbs.

4 oil changes later and no leaks.

That what I had to do, I thought I was going to break the oil filter wench. The inside 3/8 was bending, got a socket on the wench.

I hand tighten it on, hoping it comes off a little easier.

 

I take care never to over tighten my OEM plastic filter housing so no point with switching to the aluminum.
I've been changing my own oil for 45 years, never torqued and never had a problem removing a filter or housing or oil leak on any vehicle. It's not rocket science, just oil gasket tighten as tight as I can get by hand.
I only considered the aluminum because it just 'seemed' better than plastic. But after hearing of the seizing issues I figured not.

I prefer to stay OEM in general unless there's REAL need to change. I'm not a change just for the sake of change type. Tacoma's durability and longevity for the most part is due to
their engineering, so why try to second guess it.

 

Are you sure you are not mixing up a pressure bypass valve and anti-drain valve?

The anti-drain valve has a single purpose only.
Tacomas replacement filter even comes with a nipple to drain the cartridge before taking it off.

 

Did you read his question? How is the filter on our trucks going to empty itself? Drain back valve or not. Gravity is going to keep it full.

 

Yep. I had the dealership do an oil change, and when I took it to an oil change joint the next time, they seriously struggled to get the damn thing off.

 

The gorilla that did my 20K oil change at Toyota installed the cartridge filter on my 2017 4runner so tight that when it got to 30K and I did it myself for the first time, I had to put a floor jack under the breaker bar/oil filter wrench, put some of the weight of the vehicle on the wrench while I turned it to keep it from slipping off. That was the only way I could get it to break loose in my garage.

Hmm, possibly the last one to install it used some red loctite?

 

Use breaker bar or either slide a metal or plastic pipe on the handle of your ratchet to get some leverage. I'd personally would take it to the dealer because if the break it they have to replace it. With it being plastic there is a chance it might crack or break coming off. I bet it's cross threaded. This is why I will never take any of my vehicles to the dealership. I've had issues with both local Ford and Toyota dealership. The Ford dealership is full of idiots and the Toyota dealership won't take care of your vehicle.

 

Update on the situation. I think I'm good to go for now. I been thinking about what to do about the situation. I did drive the truck to the supermarket today and everything was fine. I checked the oil before the short trip. It was fine and looked super clean despite the old filter.
Yesterday I ran the truck about 5 minutes or more on the ramps checking around the filter for leaks, seen nothing, I had it wiped off the bottom drain area where I did drain the filter before the failed removal. I backed off the ramps let it run some more after checking the oil on level ground. Checked again for leaks nothing I could see. Today I checked from the top all I seen was some oil residue around the one part of the opening in the TRD skid plate but the cover plate was all dry so that bit of oil is probably from draining the filter with the plastic thing where it runs down your arm and all.
No sign of leaks after the trip.
So since the dealership that last did the oil change is the dealership in Baltimore I'm likely not going back there since I'm not going to be there for more than a month. I am going to stop by another mechanic shop near work a few people said was decent and see what they say about it Monday. I have the aluminum cap if it breaks on them to use. Since it didn't come off normally I just don't feel comfortable attempting it myself for fear I'll break it and be stuck home with no vehicle I can drive
Since I'm looking for a new mechanic since the guy I was going to retired I have to try out someone sooner or later.

This has really had me worried I broke the filter cover or will have leaks and mess up my truck. I'm really trying to assure myself it's ok

 

That's exactly why I was using a socket on the filter wrench. I know if it's too tight the 3/8 drive hole can bend.

Yeah the torque spec is 18 foot pounds. You can just about do that by hand
