How to get raw throttle response

KDMax is one of many tune options, including OVTune (Mat's own tunes). KDMax has one hell of a marketing team, so
they appear at the top of a lot of threads. Having run tunes from all but one company making them available, I won't comment of KDMax is the best, or not.
I will say that my truck behaves like the daughter of someone on the forum who had the real Ginger, so it's hard to make it happy.
The best you can do is read between the lines, and try as many tunes as you can afford. One of them will hopefully do what you want.

 

Any chance you could give us a readers digest version of your impressions on the tunes you've run?

 

i find if i wear heavy boots the truck is much faster. easier to press the pedal down further i guess. maybe they tuned it for the "lead foot" drivers.

 

While I mostly agree with you on this forum, what you just posted is incorrect. PC will definitely give you a better throttle response, there is no argument there.

 

I use these guys and my throttle response is fucking instant.

 

i wanted to stay naturally aspirated and wanted to get everything out of the hardware i could, and throttle response, or more specifically power delivery, was my focus. because I've stayed NA, all the gains are small from whatever you do, so my plan was to optimize all the little things together, but there was one big one that clicked it all in and hasn't been mentioned here.

for the drivetrain i did a full custom exhaust, open flow, dump tubes & rear cat delete, and a KD Pro tune with some custom enhancements. but the thing that clicked in the throttle response in a much bigger way than anything else is Solid Off-road solid motor mounts for the V6. they just blew my mind and still do months after install.

all this is on a MT truck. if i couldn't modulate the throttle independent of transmission then i wouldn't even mess with any of this. in a MT i can rev into the power and let it into the drivetrain, but with an AT you're stuck having to rev up from idle under load, and this little motor just can't dance with that.

 

Well, a supercharger is technically a bolt on.

 

These trucks are drive by wire. There is a computer between your foot and the throttle. Its like driving a tesla. It feels dead.

I have two almost identical sports cars one year apart. One has drive by wire and 100 more hp, but the one with the actual throttle cable is much more rewarding to drive.

Now the tuning on the throttle map is completely dead until you push it past 50% and then it kicks in way too much throttle and downshifts the transmission. There is no feel.

I hate drive by wire, but then again the Tacoma is a big fat ugly truck and I don't expect it to get me places quickly.

 

Many opinions are out there on the Sprint booster/Pedal commander...find someone local that has one and try it. It works, and makes the truck a little more fun to drive. They can be had for a decent sale price and it provides a better driving experience, and it allows you to adjust on the fly. My motorcycles have a rain, touring and sport mode. The Tacoma is like the rain mode, a Sprint booster can make it feel like touring or sport, whichever you like. For the right price its worth it.

 

I've used a pedal commander before on a Subaru, but for this truck, I'd get a tune before I spent the money on an electronic throttle toy. In fact, the only reason I got it for the Subaru was for lack of options, no gearing, and a terrible CVT. A tune goes a VERY long way in these trucks and that is the route I plan on going along with some gears. Even stock, a tune is almost mandatory. Do it. Do it. Do it.

 

Well, there is no "reasonable" argument. I have a Sprint Booster on my 2nd gen, to call it a "placebo" or a "toy" is nothing more than a ridiculous opinion.

 

Really not sure why your throttle doesn't respond like any other vehicle...i can't tell any difference in engine response pushing on the go petal when at idle in park than when i owned my last toyota truck...a 2001 tundra 4.7. I just push the petal a smidgeon an the rpm come up instantly. Your's does sound like its out of calibration, or something if it doesn't act the same.
As far as more power...gotta swap an LS6 in there.

But, if I have the SB turned on then the truck responds faster than it does when the SB is turned off - all without mashing on the pedal. In other words, it does exactly what I want. It is neither a placebo nor is it a toy.

 

Tacotoast just doesn't want to give in.

I personally hate PC's or Sprint boosters, but it achieves what is desired.

On tundras it squawks the tires like crazy on higher settings, its really hard to take off smoothly.

 

Lots of people have them on many different kinds of cars...BMW's and Porsche's too. They work well. I am waiting for a sale to get one. I am not willing to get a tune for a lot of reasons. Part of tune does have an effect just like a SB in throttle responsiveness. If that is all one needs to be happier with the truck, go for it! No more haters, they do work for what some people want. The only thing is that it is more "manly" to say "I have a tune and make lots more HP" than it is to quietly say "I have a throttle angle enhancer that works really well but causes some to hate on it". But if you have a whole bunch of shovels, trax and rotax packs bolted on, that can help with manliness A little humor helps in life
