Can a non-off-road Tacoma that is 4x4 be made off-road?

If I don't get the one that says "off-road," does that mean I'm severely limited on going off-road? Can I add things after-market later?

 

You are not limited in anyway that you would encounter in normal offroad driving. I previously had an offroad and now have a sport that still gets taken offroad frequently. You can easily add better aftermarket suspension and a locker to a non-offroad if you want to.

It’s just a trim level. Better suspension, no air dam, black fender flares, electronic diff, and with “crawl control” and a few other features. Get good tires and you should be fine for most off-roading (unless you’re doing crazing crawling or mudding stuff). Definitely not severely limited

 

Honestly all you need are tires. Toyota trucks are very capable.

As others said, its just a trim level. The offroad comes with mts (multi terrain select) and crawl control, and the rear electronic locker. If you get an sr5 4x4 and use that, it will be just fine. You have the 4x4 and you can build your truck up from there where desired / needed.

 

I haven't bought it yet . That's why I'm asking. I don't want to buy the wrong one. I have a good deal on a 2016 with tow package but no off-road 50k miles SR5, and a 2017 that's an SR, but 18k, both 4x4.

 

And honestly, it is between this and a Ranger. I want to drive the Nissan 2022 though.

No you are not limited at all. An SR will do 95% of what a PRO will do.

I off-road my truck all the time, it’s fantastic.

 

You should have got the rock edition. They come with a 3 link front suspension and a solid axle.

 

That just means your warranty will be voided.

If nissan hasnt replaced the front diff, stay away. Aluminum housing, loves to turn into a grenade, on or offroad. Thats why so many Xterra and Frontier owners upgraded their front diffs to a titan diff.

Id bet my right nut that its the same front diff.

I had an Xterra from 2006 till 2021, lots of upgrading on parts that we never should have had to upgrade.

 

There are some minor changes in brake booster a few other minor area, but the only thing that really counts is the rear locker. I have used it a few times but this was in situations like where the road wasn’t passable so we had to go up a creek fall to get around it or a time when I got stuck in the snow and had to dig out the truck first since it was high centered on the skid and rear diff. Outside of those I have not used it. I would ask if you are going to be in a place you need a rear locker because I have been on plenty of rough places without it and there isn’t an issue and to be honest I didn’t try either of the above without the rear locker over fear of digging the snow again or body damage from the side of the creek fall if I didn’t make it up. Anyway Plenty if great upgrades for off-road beyond the rear locker you can do with any of them like bigger and better tires for the environment you are in.
