Found a gem, now 6,000 miles later....we got problems.

It’s handled through the gear ratios in the differentials.

Computers and sensors wiring harness. Without having the other truck there side by side forget it

 

I know you live in Florida but if you checked out sunwest engines here in medical lake Washington. They typically have 3.4 is ready to build and 2.7's. I live really close to them and I know they're good guys there

 

Install a Toyota Turbo Diesel. If you're gonna spend the coin, make it unique.

 

If I was in the same shoes, probably go that salvage route. It no doubt a bit of gamble, but may get a gem good for 300k miles. Plus having the old block and head for rebuild another plus.

not really, same tranny, different housing but this website sells the plug and play wires for u wont fiddle around, a donor truck makes it easier. Just a 4banger in an access cab sucks when u know u couldve had a v6

 

I don’t think you’re factoring in all the details. Welding in new motor mount perches, redoing your fuel lines since the fuel filters are in different locations, splicing cables (even if you are using the Off-road Solutions conversion harness I believe you’re referring to as per their instructions, which is also anywhere from $740-$865 depending on what year donor engine you get), redoing AC and power steering lines, and building or buying a new starter harness and hoping your donor comes with a power steering pump and AC condenser which they usually don’t, and finding a new fan shroud. I’m probably forgetting a few things since like you, I’ve never done this swap lol. OP start with the basics and maybe you can rebuild the head and the bottom end made it out with minimal damage.

An update here from the original poster. After weighing our options, which were not ideal... We decided to go with a remanufactured motor from Yotaone. After speaking with both the owner and his wife, doing my due diligence, we went this route. We are hoping the decision will be the right one in retrospect.

 

Had same.....someone stabbed my HB on off from the key...
damaging the KEY....
Subsequent repairs just wallowed out the key seat.....ruining the crank....Most likey over zealous air impact......

First sign of trouble.....whole dash lights up....all the warning lights on......HB spinning free.



From now on I will always take off the sharp edge on the key seat on leading edge of a new Harmonic balancer....just to give trouble wide berth......
Oil pump gasket goes avg 80K or so.....HB removal is required path to this.....unfortunately...

 

Update to this thread, We got our Yota one motor back in the vehicle. Wait was long, but we have a 100K warranty now. Truck was back underway for a good while. Son was happy...truck ran like a top. Much quicker acceleration. We could feel that it was getting better with more miles too as the engine seated in and loosened up. Did the break in oil change. Things were good for a while.

Then door lock issues. Which are a son of a bitch. Thank goodness for this site. What a treasure!

Fast forward a few more months and now the fuel pump is gone. We watched several videos to try to get to the pump conventionally removing the fender well and dropping the fuel tank but found that just removing the bed was a much easier work load move. I am a busy medical provider trying to teach my now 20 yo some mechanical skills.

The tiny bolts holding in the fuel pump sending unit were corroded and rusted to the point that several of them just sheared off, despite pre lubrication with PB blaster. we got them out with lots of elbow grease and will go at the nubs with easy outs.

Sheesh, would have been cheaper to just buy a new Tacoma....building memories and frustrations, ,...together.
