I've been doing some searching of the forums but information is conflicting on what is direct fit. I see the Subaru tweeters are a direct replacement fit for 3rd Gen's but not exactly for 2nd. Is there anything available that is literally plug & play for 2nd gens, pop out the old tweeter and put in the new without wiring anything up? I think the 3rd Gens you can remove just the tweeter and trim without pulling the whole door panel off. This what I'm going after at this point, a decent upgrade but easy application. I was looking at Infinity tweeters on Crutchfield and they sell a kit for them for my truck, but I wonder if it still needs modifying or not. Thanks for the help guys.

Ive been looking and reading up on this as well. Since i have the base model headunit vs an Entune unit, i think i am going to add some components and a small 4 channel amp to run fronts and rears. Since your truck is newer, im guessing you have the Entune unit which is better. Hopefully @destin_meeks will see this post and he seems to be the go to guy on here and offers great info on speaker combos and may be able to point you in the right direction. From what i read, a lot of people who do just the tweeter upgrade, later on end up replacing all the speakers as well.

Thanks man. I might end up doing the same thing at some point. I already have an amp that is powering two 10" subs behind the rear seats. I have it turned down because I don't do the heavy bass thing, but I still need better sound from the rest of the speakers. I'm reading that the tweeters is the best bang for the buck difference, especially if you already have the bass covered.

I agree, i dont want heavy bass anymore just something to fill in whats missing. My plan is to take an OEM JBL factory sub box and replace the sub with something decent and a strong amp. Gives me an OEM look and just a little thump back there. Im trying to decide on the head unit and speakers at the moment to hopefully knock it out in the spring. Just finished up the Accessorides remote start so that was a nice addition

Second gen tweeters have two ears of metal built into their housing that double as mounting points onto the Y shaped bracket that holds the tweeter. When i did mine i couldn't figure out how to mount the new tweeters without the origional tweeter bracket, so i cut the old tweeter apart and used the old casing as my attachment point. Ill see if i still have pictures, it was a PITA. Im sure some smarter guys than me have it figured out, but it was the best i could come up with

Here ya go, the old bracket with drilled out rivets, used a chunk of wood and some screws to hold new tweeter cup into the old casing

i did the Subaru Tweeter upgrade it wasnt that hard but yes when you have the panel off you may as well upgrade the lower speaker. i believe a 6x9 will fit i went with JL C2-650x's. my only regret is not doing sound deadening at the same time.

Sound deadening is a must. I have a box of Noico I picked up and hope to do soon. I’m sure you can 3D print that tweeter mount for it or draw it out and cut it from a piece of ABS plastic

@Tacoma13_NC did you end up finding a direct plug and play tweeter for 2nd Gen? I have the same year model as you, looking to upgrade now myself. Let me know if you have any answers. Thanks.

I second the Subaru tweeter upgrade, I did it as well, sounds great. I had to buy a new harness to make it plug and play, not hard to do. I should note I have the JBL system but I don’t see that being any reason why non-JBLs couldn’t do it.
Noico the doors and upgrade the lower speaker while you’re at it. So glad I spent the extra time doing this.

Actually now that I think about it, Tacomaholic has a step by step video for non-JBLs on YouTube. Check it out.

I'm just going to have go buy the Tacomaholic video. I bought the Subaru Kicker's. Doesn't looks too hard. Thanks guys.

I just did this on my truck today in combo with replacing all the speakers, moving around the wires in the connector is really simple.

The only thing I'd say is that you don't really "need" a dremel, its just cutting some plastic and I did it pretty quickly (less than 5 mins per side) with just a pair of electrical cutters and a razor blade knife.

All in all was a pretty simple swap.

I'm not audiophile so I can't really tell you how much better it sounds from stock but comparing it to my car (Mercedes AMG) I'd say it sounds just as good or close to it so definitely an upgrade worth doing.

I went with Kicker KS series 6x9's in the front, 6.5's in the back and the subaru tweeters.

Also recently ordered the Joying headunit so when that comes in I would expect the speakers to sound a little better since they won't be underpowered.

That sounds pretty good. You mind adding the link to the Joying unit you bought? I am going with pioneer 6x9’s and 6.5’s. I have the Subaru tweeters. Just haven’t made the time to do the install. That’s encouraging to know you don’t really need a dremel. Thanks for the info!

I ended up going with the 8" with the knobs (ordered it direct from joying here: https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-8...r-upgrade-system-support-hands-free-call.html) there's a long thread on it and the reviews have been pretty solid.

to me having the volume knobs seemed better than a slightly larger screen and made it look more like a stock radio which I like.

Also FWIW once I got the first door panel off and knew how it worked I made pretty quick work of it.

Got them all done in under an hour and wasn't even trying to rush, it goes pretty fast if you're comfortable working with speakers

Not comfortable with speakers at all. But I do have the plug in play harness’. Just the tweeter is a making me nervous to install. But with patience it should be alright.
