Yea it's coming down pretty good here. Made my gas and beer run today, so I don't have anywhere to go Monday and Tuesday so I'm good.

Snow blower fired right up after adding some gas. The China carb I put on it last year seems to be working good. No surging or any troubles even running it earlier when it was like 22°.

Heh, China clone. Honestly, I put the same thing on my 8.5HP Sno-king. It required some tuning both low and high speed, but after that flawless. Fired up today in roughly 20° weather without issue or surging once a little heat got in the motor. Still have my original carb, but it isn't adjustable like this one. Some work good, some not so much. Guess I got lucky?

 

I put a couple of China junk boxes on my neighbor's trimmer and edger a couple of years ago. Both run well

 

Yea bought 6 of them but used them all.
If this one performs like I think I’ll order 3 or 4 more..

 

Tuning is easy..
This carb is used for 8 to like 11 horse.

 

Honestly I feel it's worth it to try a cheap $15 Chinese knock off nowadays. I've rebuilt many of small engine carburetors to have them wind up running just OK. Hell, I spent $20 on a made in USA Stens Walbro kit for a friends chainsaw and it still didn't run right...

Also was more impressed my riding mower started today after sitting a couple months and last nights temp being 9°. The ol' Kohler 22HP twin fired up after getting some fuel drawn. I did cheat and the battery was in the basement on the tender with an estimated temp of 50°...

 

The problem is the air passages get plugged from the crap in the ethanol fuel.
Buy the time I soak it for a week and use wire cleaners and blow everything out. It’s just easier to replace..

 

Yea, it was fairly easy for me. I cut my teeth on small engines, mostly Tecumseh engines back when I was like 12? Had an old Ariens snow thrower that my dad brought over that wouldn't run. It sat around many years and we tried to run it after a big snow storm. Wouldn't run worth a shit. So, young teenage me tore apart the carb and got it running like a champ for the next one.

Yea dumbass me put my remaining 3 gallons of ethanol free in the beater car a couple weeks ago while it was still warmish out. That friggin' jinxed it! Only readily option today was 87 10% ethanol. I'll drain it and the carb at the end of the season like I normally do. Don't normally have issues...

wrenching on the airboat today - we found the oil leak and plan to use this method to seal it today

"As recommended by Ed Kollin of Camguard, and further amplified by CFO member Vince Endter who learned of this technique during his recent Lycoming engine school in Williamsport, we put a vacuum on the case via an industrial vacuum duct-taped to the oil filler tube.

We then removed the case-half bolts along the spine of the engine where we had a BAD oil leak (1/2 quart per hour). Then, the area, including the bolt holes and along the spine, were cleaned with MEK to get rid of any oil.

We then used kind-of-pricey Loctite 290 to seal the area. Applying the Loctite to the spine, we could see it wicking down past the open bolt holes. We made roughly three passes with the Loctite, then turned off the vacuum cleaner. We then reinstalled the hardware, and left the plane to sit overnight.

On ground run up, and now after a dozen hours or so of flight operation, the entire area is as dry as a new engine. Amazingly good results!"

Do you have a thread crack leak or flat surface leak?

 

The seam is leaking where the two case halves come together at the top of the engine right above the crankshaft area. I will snap a photo later today.

Here is the method used during assembly as a fyi.

In the assembly procedure of a piston engine, it is standard practice to use silk thread and a thin film of sealant to seal the crankcase parting surfaces. Engine manufacturers outline this procedure in their overhaul manuals, and it is an acceptable method of sealing these surfaces.

 

Mmmmm silk thread?
Wondering if a straight anaerobic sealant would be a better suitable sealant.
Don’t have to rush while assembling.
I use to use it with Chrysler and I liked it.
