    You still use gas?

I'm having JerryRigEverything turn my taco into an EV...

The 3.5 calls for 0w20 oil, I don't believe there is any conventional on this. It's seem like synthetic.

The manual for my 2017 4Runner (same 4.0 as in 2nd gen tacos) says 10K synthetic changes. That’s what I do for that vehicle because my wife babies it and she’s the one who drives it 95% of the time. I do 5K changes on my taco tho, because I have to go up 6,000 ft. elevation several times a week for work in the mountains. So I follow the “severe” service recommendations as far as the manual goes. And besides the first 5K when the truck was brand new and still breaking in, I don’t baby it. I don’t mistreat it either, but I’m not afraid to get on it when I want to or need to.

Does anyone on here do 5K drain/fills (no filter), and then 10K oil and filter? I’ve thought about it since it’s still better than waiting the 10K (and takes about 1/4 of the time).

So you're doing 2 oil changes a year.

Other people who drive 10,000 miles a year and do 5,000 mile oil changes are also doing...2 oil changes a year.

You're paying for twice as much gas every year. $1,100.00 more for gas. Now that sounds like throwing away money!

A fool and his money are soon parted! ;-)

    I hope you're happy!

This sounds good, because doing 10,000 oil changes while also getting it analyzed from Blackstone, costs just as much as 5,000 mile oil changes.

The 1GR in the 4runner has dual VVT-I and also recommends 0w-20 (for CAFE reasons, probably). 0W-20 is only available as synthetic, so that's why the recommended interval is 10K.

But, they recommend a 5K interval if you use the 4Runner for basically anything it's built for, ie off-roading, towing, hauling, dusty roads, etc. I do 5K changes on mine.

If another 2,500 miles makes you feel better, then go for it.

That was just an observation. I wasn't asking your permission. Hopefully you can grasp that concept.

The manual recommends 5K or 10K depending on your driving habits.

Also, tire rotations should be performed at 5K intervals, so it's just easier to do everything at the same time.

Back in the day... a lot of owners manuals read 7500mi unless under severe conditions.

Every 5K, synthetic. Buy oil on sale, and should not run you more than $2 a quart.
You drive around town? It is severe service.

Lol I had to read this several times. I'm still not sure the point you're making. Maybe being sarcastic. No clue.

I think when I have 200-300k miles my truck will be as happy as any of the 5k oil change interval people here.

Men arguing about oil and chainsaws is always entertaining!

A few points that seem to get overlooked in these threads:
-Mileage is not a good way to gauge oil changes, there are too many variables, (Driving 55 mph on a flat highway at 60 degrees vs. Hills, trailers off roading with 35" tires in the desert at 110 degrees, etc. Having an hour meter would be better).
-Not all synthetic oil is the same, (Research Group III vs. Group IV Base Stocks).
-Changing the oil and filter only removes about 85% of the old oil. So it's possible that there are a few molecules of the factory oil in there at 200,000 mi.

That being said... You're all right!

    Here's what I do:
-Use Group IV oil. It will last longer.
-Do the first change at +- 2000 mi.
-Use the manufacturer's recommendation after that as a baseline. Easy miles add a few thousand. Hard miles subtract a few thousand.

My dealer put a sticker in the windshield of my '22 that says bring it in at 5000 for the first one....

Sure, but if all you wanted to do is see if the oil is still good, you could just do it a couple of times for verification and then quit.

I test my oil for early indications of other issues like head gasket leaks or leaky injectors... stuff I can catch early and correct before any real damage is done. It's a diagnostic tool for a car I plan on putting a few hundred thousand miles on and don't want to break down somewhere away from the house.

Man, I tried to stay out and just mock all of you from the sidelines, but this is my least favorite dumb oil argument.

Everyone drives in town. If that was what toyota meant by severe driving, then 5k would be the standard and 10k would be the caveat for people who only drive long trips.
