Has anyone else ever used a charcoal fire to get a truck started when it got really cold??

This was before I had the space Heater and Portable welder which works a wonder on the back of a pick up.

The real downside to cold weather starting equipment .

just started to snow a fine wet snow.

My old man is an almost retired A&P mechanic for UPS on their jumbos. Brown's been very good to my family.

*If Delta works for UPS, otherwise disregard. Lol

I have never, but hear of farmers used to put a bucket of embers underneath a old tractor to warm them up some.

Here I thought with his advanced knowledge of certain items he was in manufacturing and shipping .

Maybe the new building will be quality control and testing??

I got masivly sidetracked by an out of the blue road trip to pick something up and started a post but never finished it this morning so we'll do it now. :p

I actually did a "shop" related thing for once!

One of the thumb screws came off of the snowblower (two years ago...) and went who knows where. Last week when the kid was using it, the other one came off but he grabbed it.

Original partially melted one on the right, new one on the left.

    20220116_094512.jpg

And installed. Melted one closer to the muffler so it can melt some more.

    20220116_094608.jpg

    It's not much, but it's something. :p

I've been internet research and shop a little for a weld machine. They can be had for cheap but really would rather spend a little more and step up to a multi process type. Guess that's what they're called, the ones I'm looking at. I used to have a Lincoln DC250 with wire feed and bottle but traded it off some years ago. It just seem like overkill for what I'd ever need. A welder dude I work with had a dirt bike I thought I needed.

Big Tiger torch, length of 4” with a bunch of holes drilled in laid underneath was about as crude as I got. Tiger torch directly on hydraulic oil tanks. Sometimes Either but not unless I really have to & of course Prayer. Lotsa Prayer. :amen:

I stumbled upon a assortment of thumb screws at work. But they're not really thumb screws but just the tops that you can press a Alan head cap screw in. They're might even be some for a hex head bolt, I forget. I might have one laying around somewhere. I put one on a small screw for one of my wife's fishing reel handles.

Figure out just what you need to be able to do.

figure out just what machines will do the job.

The Lincoln Clones at Harbor freight the Vulcan Line and Hobart if buying new .

Yes, I've looked at all of those exactly. Was leaning towards Lincoln just for sake of getting replacement parts if ever needed, and I think Hobart would be good as well. Grandfather had his own welding service and was all about Lincoln.

It all depends which manufacture gives the best service in the area .

If they are trying to get a foothold things go really cheap at times

For home type use you can`t beat Hobart .

One of my first mentor to retire out of the machine shop, a Hobart machine is what he bought and loves it. That was 15 years ago. He didn't actually retire but quit to farm full time.

    Reserected from the dead.
It would be helpful in the 6volt and 50 wt oil days, but today's modern engines with ultra thin oil, it would likely make little difference.

Vehicles with mechanical fuel pumps and carbs that have been sitting awhile would need all the help they could get. Might as well fire up the legless Webber.

Our modern vehicles and fuel injection it won't make much difference.

I would never try with a newer gas vehicle the ground clearance would never be enough.

Back around 1982 vehicle was 4300 International turned up Cummins 13 speed No block heater down around 0 F for 3 days .

I went to crank got the ERP Even with the Charger on for about 8 hours still nothing .

Built a nice charcoal fire in a oil drain pan after it burnt off slid the pan under warmed about an hour started great .

This was in my old place with no real shop if I would have had air I would have aired up and released the brakes and pulled it to get started .

It worked nothing was broken better then getting towed and spending a few hundred dollars

I got lucky with nothin’ more than a piece of that foil back insulation & a Brooder bulb. (chickens) Gotta improvise with the cards dealt.
