Were you wenching it out or pulling it? if the latter, careful recovering in reverse, that's a good way to end up with trans problems.

As for the Jeep lift's, you could should check out NOVAJEEPERS.com if you're not already a member. It's a great group and very active. They have a section on their site for wrenching parties were you can solicit assistance or go over to someone else's to help out on their project while getting assistance on yours. I had a couple for mine years ago and got to take advantage of others knowledge while meeting some really cool people.

Mmmmmmm dat front flex is groovy!

Successfully took almost every corner sideways today. 4lo is so nasty for intentionally breaking the tires free, while also being able to straighten out with total control

    Edit: a good nasty

Wait until you get a rear locker and can be in 2hi with the rear locked because that’ll break free sideways easy as can be. Whole lotta fun for sliding around in snow.

Ever since @3pooches told me about that mod, I can’t stop thinking about how much fun it would be.

Pulling out….(it’s why my kids have 4 legs not 2 haha). Is it the kinetic jolt that’s bad or reversing under load that hurts the trans?

I appreciate the Jeep info… down that rabbit hole we go haha.

It’s a lot more complicated to do the locker anytime mod on a third gen but it’s absolutely possible, it’s been done a handful of times. Worth it though imo

I got confused a few time researching the mod. Wanting the locker to work in 2hi, 4Hi and 4low in an efficient way seems difficult. My biggest gripe right now is the e locker takes so long to lock and you can’t use it in 4hi, which is where most of my fun times happen. Really the only time I use 4low is when I need a locker.

My understanding is that the problem with reverse recovery is with pinion deflection. The coast side of the ring gear is more angled, so more likely to get perpendicular deflection at the pinon/ring interaction.

Also I've heard some transmissions don't flow fluid through the cooling circuit in reverse, but I don't really know for sure other than seeing one guy on facebook overheat his a340 trans in winter reversing up a big long hill off road. And for a quick recovery I don't see this as a big issue. More so the gear stuff

I’ve heard it’s a gear issue as well. If I ever do anything in reverse, it’s with a static strap and a very gentle tug, if the person is barely stuck. Otherwise I’ll figure out a way to tug them going forward or set up some snatch blocks and winch.

    follow up, because pictures help:

the red arrow represents the force applied from the pinon onto a single ring gear tooth in reverse. when a force is applied at an angle or on an angled surface, we can split it into two forces that act at a 90* angle to each other (orthogonal is the fancy word)
    upload_2022-1-16_22-53-26.jpg

So below, the red force can be replaced by the blue and green components. The purple angle is also the same on the gear tooth as it is on the components. Now it becomes more apparent that there is a component of the applied force that forces the pinion away from the root of the ring gear (towards the tip of the teeth). Usually the size scale of the arrows is used to represent how much force that component has. but its kinda hard to be exact with ms paint
    upload_2022-1-16_23-3-9.jpg upload_2022-1-16_22-55-56.jpg

The drive side, because of its steeper angle, has a much smaller force in the direction of deflection, and the larger component goes toward spinning the ring. Another interesting note is that the blue force along the gear tooth is a shearing force, and is what warms up your gear oil. Gear oil also has to be able withstand higher pressures and shearing than motor oil because its not pressurized. The additives that help with these are also the stanky smell

This is actually very helpful and I learned something. From reading some of your other posts explaining things (preload comes to mind) you have a knack for explaining stuff in terms a simpleton can understand, IMO anyways. Keep up the good work.

brb, getting started on my MAN HY-1350 axle swap

just kidding, but this gear talk got me down the rabbit hole because I was curious about what kind of axles the buses at work would use. Also turns out they have semi triangulated 4 links, which makes sense because airbags don't help with locating the axle or anything. Just not something I thought of
    [IMG]

articulated buses don't typically have a driven center axle, but the same axle is offered in a drive version with portal drives for straight buses. The funny part is that with offroad we all think about portals for getting the axle tube and diff higher off the ground, but in this application, the portals are used to get the whole axle assembly lower for passenger flow on the bus.

anyway thats enough off topic for me for now

With out getting all technical....Why 38's? Are the 35's not getting you where you want, or the 38's for aesthetics? Just curious.

Question for you nerds in here that know way more about suspension than I do...

I will be getting a new truck in a few months, and I would like to take the buy once, cry once approach to the coilovers/shocks. I am leaning toward the Fox DSC from AccuTune, but I can't seem to get my mind off the Kings. Plus the Kings are a bit cheaper. The AccuTune article seems to favor Fox based on materials and internals, but they also say you can't go wrong with Kings too. Is it really just a personal preference? Am I missing something? For those that run either brand, what stands out?

I was running Fox TRD Pro take-offs on my 2017 Tacoma (just sold it), and I loved the way it rode over my previous OME setup. Something about linear vs digressive. I hung on to those Pro take-offs, so I'm also considering just putting those on the new truck with some new Eibach coils, and then just worrying about making the bigger decision on Fox/King when I get back to VA in 2023. Plus it is still taking a while for new suspension to ship from what I understand, so there is that.

Any insights or opinions are welcome, and I thank you in advance!

The fox pro suspension is pretty solid. If you know you like it and already have it on hand, I would continue running those bad boys.

Regarding fox versus king, it’s six in one hand half dozen in the other in my opinion. They’re both fantastic and both can be tuned to your needs. If you want the adjuster knobs, fox takes the win there because you have two separate knobs for low and high speed compression versus king which is just some mid range compression.
