Oil catch can options for 2019 3.5 L

I've always heard that catch cans are for high performance & forced induction engines. I do not know if a naturally aspirated non-high-performance motor will see any long term benefits to having one so I'm not here to argue that. I do know a few people with 392 Hemi engines that swear by them. Same as some people with turbo & super charged engines.

What I DO see is that the catch can is solving a lot of peoples issues with their 3rd Gens in steep incline/decline situations. I've seen a few Jeep videos where the catch can has saved their engines as well. That's enough reason for me to buy one, if I had a 3.5 3rd Gen. You can't argue with results. Yes, if you install a catch can & forget about it then you're only prolonging the inevitable. I'm meticulous with maintenance & have no issues with checking the can for oil residue after any wheeling trip, during each oil change or better yet, buy a clear catch can.

EXACTLY! I have yet to see 1 case of a 3rd gen with a catch can having the smoke-out-of-the-exhaust issue happen again.

We can argue as to WHY @SRBenjamin had this issue but again, the catch can worked. Catalytic converters and mufflers are not designed to filter engine oil.

BTW, who's running a clear catch can? How's it performing? I like the clear can better than the black one.

I read somewhere on TW that the reason 3rd Gens have this issue is because the PCV baffle on the 3.5 is on the rear of the valve cover right under the PCV valve itself. On the 4.0 even though the PCV is located in the same area the baffle is located toward the front of the valve cover. You'd think Toyota would redesign that valve cover baffle location IF this is the cause of this issue but no one knows how much longer the Tacomas will bring these 3.5's since a redesign is probably around the corner.

In pictures 1-3 (no idea on degrees of this angle) I had my truck in this position for almost 15 minutes with the engine idling. In that time I was taking pictures and guiding someone down the other side of the stairs before I got back in my truck & drove over. No smoke issues at all.

In the 4th picture (no idea on degrees of this angle) I was in the truck, in drive with my foot on the brake & e-brake applied for almost 10 minutes because a truck on top of this ramp got stuck. No smoke at all.

I'm not bashing 3rd Gens. Putting this issue & that stupid plastic coolant bypass piece between the 2 heads on the rear of the engine aside, these are great trucks. Just saying that the catch can has so far proven to eliminate the oil burning issue.

Even early forced induction engines from BMW before 2011 eg the N54 and virtually all their V8 engines. Now days BMW has nailed it without needing port injection. Most M car owners, even with a mild tune, are only getting a few drops of oil in their catch cans every 10k miles. I have around 120,000 miles on my tuned 2019 M4 (making near 500 rwhp) and the thing still runs like new. With that being said, I’m fully aware that my car will now shit the bed.

 

They aren’t just for forced induction. Before I did the LS6 PCV conversion my Trans Am would fill one up in a day on a road course. Even with the LS6 PCV, it would more than half fill it. And at Big Bend Open Road Race, where I held the motor between 5k and 6.8k for 23 minutes, twice, it filled it up.

Has anyone here witnessed a late model, high mileage engine head removal? If so was carbon/crud build-up more noticeable on the PVC side of the engine?

It’s more of a direct injection issue. Port injection and Atkinson cycle engines are much more efficient at cleaning the intake valves with regular oil consumption. Strictly direct injection engines leave all sorts of issues with oil consumption whether they are N/A or turbocharged. Hyundai is a great example of how poorly some engines are designed (even N/A DI only engines) when it comes to oil consumption and the detriments it causes to the intake valves.

Aside from the Tacoma I've owned two other direct injection engines, both Volkswagen and both not port injected. One was the 2.0T FSI in a GTI, and the other was a 4.2V8 FSI in a Touareg. The oil consumption was hilariously bad even at low miles in both vehicles, I'd have to throw at least a quart of oil between oil changes, the oil was always black and the exhaust was always black. You could seem a cloud of black exhaust every time you got on it, looked like a diesel. I had a CC in the GTI and the benefit was negligible, valves still got build up and lost power, rough idle, etc. Seafoam wouldn't do anything, I had the valves manually cleaned twice in the GTI and once in the Touareg, I don't miss those days.

Love checking the dipstick in the Tacoma, port injection + direct injection is great.

 

What's the purpose of the air filter that comes with most of these? I left mine off because I figured the system was supposed to be closed.

 

I didn't update after I installed my catch can, but I have now spent several weeks in the back country wheeling. I have been up plenty of steep inclines and have not had any issues with smoke or shotdown. Not a definitive answer obviously, but I do believe that the catch can addressses the issue.

 

Haven’t gotten the heads off of it yet, but with the valve covers and intake manifold off, it’s all super nasty. The direct/port injection style on these motors makes everything build up really badly. If I remember, I’ll take some pictures tonight

Same. Just be prepared to swap the original hose back in for smog testing when that time finally comes. Pretty sure the can would be an automatic fail.

 

Yea I'm lucky I dont have to Smog my truck. Im Registered in Julian CA and we dont have to do CA smog crap...

 

I'm in Gawgia and we don't have any kind of vehicle inspection at all.
