You say you don't believe in breeding. Do you mean you support accidental breeding or you'd like dogs to become extinct?

To me, a reputable breeder goes a long way toward ensuring the people who buy from them will take care of the dog and ensure the owners have a plan. Aside from the questions, they may also visit your home--fewer do this today but many reserve the right. To dismiss what breeders are accomplishing or to say that spay/neuter is easier than working to improve the breed or to maintain standards is irresponsible.

Like I said. I don't have strong opinions on reputable breeders. Many do it right. Some are absolutely deplorable. Inbreeding, poor health, abuse, neglect, etc.

If you're actively working to improve the breed, vet potential owners, and let potential vet owners you I don't really have an issue with that. Those aren't (usually) the dogs that end up in shelters.

Some "standards" aren't good either. Breeding dogs to have breathing problems to fit a standard seems irresponsible to me. The standards exist for us. Not for the dogs. Not to say all breed standards are this way.

I have two healthy mutts. They don't meet any standards.

Like I said. Just my opinion. I'm not out there trying to shut reputable breeders down.

Everyone has their own wants and needs when it comes do getting a dog. That's fair. Mine is just different than yours.

    But shelters promote irresponsible breeding.

Brachycephalic breeds, pugs, frenchies, boxers, and many others have special requirements to accommodate their airways and breathing issues.

You're making it easier to choose from a reputable breeder by pointing out the issues that come with irresponsible breeding. :)

That's a horrible idea. What time?

Shelters often don't have the luxury of picking and choosing what they're going to take in or manage, and often work with smaller budgets. The aim of a shelter isn't to manage a breed, it's to manage a population and find homes for dogs that already exist. Breeders can pick and choose based on the mom's health when they will produce puppies. I think you're talking apples and oranges trying to compare what they do. One is in it for the population, one has a bit financial gain.

Irresponsible breeders promote irresponsible breeding. The existence of a shelter isn't a cause it's a result. Both my dogs came from places where there are no shelters at all. No roads to shelters. No vets. Nothing. Not sure what a shelter has to do with that. Especially since shelters make sure a dog can't breed before they go to their new homes.

If you want to choose a responsible breeder that's fair. Like I said.... No serious issue with that. I just can't stress the "responsible" part of that enough.

You're welcome to not only your opinion, but also to spend your money as you choose. Not here to change your mind. I just think the premise that "shelters encourage poor breeding" is misconstrued. Shelters don't encourage breeding, they work to decrease it in their areas of responsibility to control populations of unwanted pets.

I am researching the dog I want. I have some allergenic responsibilities toward my wife to consider. I have been searching 200 miles, sometimes farther, to find a poodle mix or poodle. There are none, zero, that I can find.

I believe in rescuing pets as much as possible, support out local shelters, and buy from thier thrift shops on occasion. That being said, I have also started researching breeders. When I'm ready to aquire a dog, I will try a rescue first, then the breeder.

Good for you. I have several friends with Labradoodles. According to my sister, who is one owner, they have their own set of issues that you should ask about or look into. I don’t know much about them other than they’re pretty nice dogs. Poodles tend to be fairly smart dogs too. There are also smaller dogs, in the 10-15 pound range that are good for those with allergies.

    Good luck with you search.

Thanks. I am reading and asking everyone who's walking dogs in the 'hood what they have. Neighbors across the street have a six month old Bernedoodle. That's going to be a big dog.

not meaning to be snarky but...

they wouldn't piss you off if you had to clean up after all of those dogs whose owners let them go - and don't clean up the crap - in the practice fields and recess areas...

the signs are up in reaction to human selfishness and stupidity, not dislike of dogs...

Of course they are. I mean they can bag the shit and drop it on the trail instead of carrying it too.
