For some more context, everyone in the photo aside from the girl digging (my sister) was from another group who tried the trail in there Subaru and stopped further back when they saw me stuck. I’ve done this trail many times and the main road is not far away. Usually I would go with another truck, but luckily another jeeper tried the trail after the Subaru and brought some more recovery gear on top of what I had.

The reason we actually decided to do this trail to the hot springs which are about 2miles in is because we saw a newer stock jeep cherokee stuck from the road, and I decided to go help him out - I pulled him out no problem and got him back to the road then I tried the trail myself and got stuck a bit further in.

I’m kind of glad this happened being that we were able to get out, definitely learned a lot and will probably save me in the future. Also great advice from everyone!

Here's a video from our friends down South.

I personally run my tires in the 14psi range if I know I won't be going fast or hitting sharp turns.

Much fun and good advice given. Glad you made it out. Think my favorite advice given was momentum.

Big tire chains, not the kind you put on to drive on the highway, and your locker will get you through most things. Or they’ll dig deep enough that you’re really stuck.

I usually try to only use tire chains to get out of situations, not out myself into them.

No need to guess about chains. If your tires can reach ice, dirt, or pavement without the truck being sunk to the frame chains can help. If not all chains will do is bury you in the snow faster. Be careful what kind of chains you get and make sure your truck has enough clearance without tearing up sensors, etc. For example there are no chains or cables that will fit the front tires on a stock 2nd gen taco. Not all will work no the rear.

Rule number one for snow wheeling (all wheeling really) is don't go without another vehicle and the right recovery gear including at a minimum gloves, real shovels, shackles (soft and hard), and a kinetic rope or strap. Both vehicles must have real recovery points front and rear. Let someone know where you are going and be prepared to safely spend the night or walk out.

Yes, but it is so easier to blame millennials ... and then ... of course, California ...

Don't be discouraged by the nattering nabobs of negativism. You are having fun with your truck -- and that is the point.

What I hope for is that you compile the suggestions here, get a fellow wheeler, and make a fun (but safe) run at those hot springs. If you do that definitely post back how the trip went. And, tip of the hat to your sister for jumping in to help!

I love a good snow story, so keep this going !

@Kadenm I was curious what brand of traction boards you tore up if you recall? I ordered a cheap pair Orsich I think. Was on the beach in Texas once and would have offered them to help a person out who was buried in the sand with 2wd truck.
