Nice. I got about a month before my framebag (ordered unrelated to bikepacking, but it works for it) gets to me from Bedrock Bags, but that'll let the Swell warm up a bit at night. It's in the teens-low 20s right now.

Anybody ever rebuilt a free hub? Was riding this weekend and my rear axle came loose, which was noticed by skipping gears and general slop in the drive train. Pulled off the rear wheel and 4 pawls fell out of the free hub (i9 torch). I am going to fully take it apart to see the extent of the damage, but I am guessing the springs for the pawls are long gone. I compressed everything back together on the trail and had enough engagement points to ride back to the parking lot, but cut the ride short as I knew I was on borrowed time.

Once I see whats going on, I have three options:

    1. Have the local bike shop rebuild
    2. I try and rebuild
    3. Get a new free hub and be done with it.

Hoping the internal threads on the hub shell are fine, but time will tell.

From what I can see, it looks like dealing with those little springs and the pawls is going to be a major PITA, but I might be making it out to be more than it is in my own head.

It's pretty simple to put in new springs and pawls. Cheap too.

I haven't looked at an i9 hub lately. Do they have a removable ratchet ring? Good to replace that too if it's damaged.

Ultimately you'll want to figure out why it came loose. Pawls don't usually just fall out.

Not a dumb question. Take the wheel off and strap it to the front of the boat.

And you want to raft the flint with our bikes in the boat? I’m intrigued.

Theres a few bikepacking routes here in UT that you HAVE to raft a section to complete.

My Thule t2 pro was having issues with the locking mechanism, I couldn’t get the hitch lock/anti wobble to move. They are sending me the entire arm, seems like a pretty good warranty

Agreed that pawls don’t just fall out. My hunch is that hub or freehub (maybe both?) bearings are shot. If those have too much play or are bad it can cause weird loading on the ratchet mech and then bam. Could also be grease/gunk causing the pawls to stick or not return.

Woof. Didn’t even notice this until I washed my bike but must have kicked up or caught a rock just right.

    Enve M630 rim.

Side hits are the worst. I'd email Enve to see if they think its still good to ride but I bet it is. Bet they'd hook it up with a good crash replacement price if it needed to be fixed.

Honestly, I don’t know when it happened so I may have been riding on it for a while. It’s through the sidewall and a decent sized soft spot but in between spokes so it may be ok for a bit.

I emailed Enve and we will see what they say.

Well took the freehub out and was impressed I made it out in limp mode with only one pawl working - the ratchet gear is still in good shape to boot! I am assuming with the rear axle being loose and the torque during a climb allowed the freehub to separate just enough from the hub to allow the pawls to drop out. I am now debating getting new pawls and springs, or just getting a new freehub and not worrying about it again.

    Correct.

Shit…. If you have a soft spot ditch it. Structural integrity is compromised.

    LOL.

I'd own a packraft if we actually had somewhere to use it in Socal. I know some riders who use them in UT to complete loops near Moab and other places. I've always been really interested in that. Bikepacking on its own can add a lot of adventure to your riding. Add a packraft, and all of a sudden you have a lot of new route possibilities.

Mike C is one of the riders who first organized the GDMBR and has been on some amazing trips up in Alaska riding along the coast. These are true WTF-level of epic, worth checking out:

https://lacemine29.blogspot.com/2018/07/alpine-style-intro.html?view=snapshot You'll need to find the rest of the days by scrolling down in his magazine timeline

General Utah adventuring also looks awesome, and less committing. https://mikesee.exposure.co/fat-n-happy

I would replace that freehub. It sucks but the grooves for the pawls look wallowed out, and you dont want it to keep happening.

It all depends on flow. 16.5 Miles in slow water will take a long time - like two full days. But sounds like a dope adventure!

Identify the upstream dam and align your trip with the water releases and that will help a lot. For reference on whitewater you can cover about 7-9 miles per day and that water is obviously much faster
