What's the best year of Tacoma?

My first, only and last Tacoma is a 2015 4 cyl./5-speed/4x4. Lucky me it’s the best thing ever. Purely by accident

edit: I rented a 2021 TRD OR for a week and it was awesome!!!

 

Probably 1985.

 

Toyotas were in their prime in the mid-late 1970's. The Corolla 2TC and the Celica/Pickup 20R were 500,000-1,000,000 mile engines.

American cars were durable in the early-mid 60's before pollution controls were adopted. The inline 6's and small V8's went 200-300K miles - the Plymouth Slant 6 400,000.

 

There were no Tacoma's in 1985 though.

 

Not in my world lol. An early 60s plymouth Valiant slant 6 with the engine shot around 90k miles sitting a friends backyard was our hideout as kids lol. Not a single person I know back in the 60s and early 70s had a 6 cyl or V8 go to 200k miles, including me. 120-130k was the best I can remember.
I never saw a 60s car back then get 200k miles, I’m sure it happened somewhere and equally sure that was rare. And I throw the BS flag at 300k being anything but a rarity or a dream lol.

Getting 200k, 300k didn’t become typical until better oils (Quaker state was the worst back in 60s early 70s, I saw many sludged up engines that had run that) and better engine manufacturing with better tolerances. I rebuilt my own engine and helped friend rebuild theirs and saw it first hand.
Synthetic oil has helped tremendously in improving mileage.

I had a '92 and have a '13. I have no basis to compare them to any others except in terms of aesthetics. I like the way the 2012-2015's look.

 

And comparing "old" cars to "new" cars is like comparing a rotary dial land line to an iPhone.

 

Lol yes fridges stoves and bathrooms too.

 

My mom had the green whirlpool fridge.

Really loved my first Tacoma, a 2004 TRD Off Road Double Cab in Radiant Red. My son has it now and it is still going strong with 187K miles. I told him not to get rid of it without asking me if I want it back.

 

True, just real TOYOTA trucks. No Canada, no Mexico , Kentucky or Ohio. real players straight from Japan!

My first Toyota pickup was a 1977. Great little truck for the day. I was a single teacher with little money. The brake line broke so being the cheap person I am, I drove it 26 miles through Oklahoma City to the school auto shop using the e brake. Another teacher rode with me. Her husband wouldn’t take her to work. A new 1982 Celica was my favorite.
I bought a used 2013 2wd drive and loved it. I was downsizing from a 2014 Ram Limited. Liked it so much that within two weeks I bought a new loaded 2017 TRD Off Road. I needed 4WD. Sorry third Gen owners but I have never disliked a truck so much. On the turnpike it would go from 1,800 rpm to 4,000 to climb a hill. Constantly hunting for the lowest possible gear. It was totaled seven months later while parked in Santa Fe, NM. I didn’t look at another Tacoma to replace it.
Now I have a 2013 Tacoma 4WD AC with 188,000 miles and love it. I use it to travel the farms but find myself driving it many other places leaving the new truck in the garage for long trips and towing the RV. It will be around for a long time.
My son picked up a 2003 Pre Runner with a blown head gasket. 2.7 4 cylinder with 260,000 miles. We had it on the rack yesterday and are just amazed at Toyota engineering. He has done a lot of work to it and it is for sale. He pointed to the upper control arms and told me they look much stronger than the ones on his 2017 Chevrolet 1 ton.
Second generation gets my vote hands down.

 

The ones with the 1GR-FE engine and A750 transmission.
