Norfolk Southern is closing a lot of their shops up. Those that remain are all unionized. Its what prevented me from going into the industry.

Ha, it happens. My coworkers that deal with transit agencies spend a lot of time working overnight since the tracks are too busy during the day. I’m lucky in that the product I deal with isn’t invasive so we can be out whenever it’s convenient

I got to talking to the conductor on a Metra train (Chicago regional transit) as we rolled into Ogilvie Station. There's a massive array of switches leading into the station, and they're all human-operated. The conductor said (just his word here; I have no way to validate it) that a bunch of big brains from a bunch of big tech consultancies had tried to automate the switches and none could find an algorithm that worked well enough.

At the time I thought he was talking about this array at the platforms:

But in hindsight, it might have been this one:

Not bad minus that ugly blue/gray two tone paint job he's got going on

Also, this shit drives me nuts in FS ads. At least use your hand and wipe that shit off the seat if you're not going to clean the truck before putting up pics trying to sell it.

its like when people leave their trash ridden interiors a mess and then post the pics asking $15k for a truck with 200k miles on it
