Did I destroy my rear diff?

I am trying to diagnose what I broke. I am thinking transfer case or rear diff. I heard something break (metal pop) on a off-camber hill climb yesterday. I thought it was a CV but it turned out that I don't have rear traction.

I have it up on jack stands:
tires don't spin in 2wd but drive shaft spins
front tires spin in 4 hi & low, but not rear tires, drive shaft spins
4w low locked, it looks like the d/s rear tire spinned momentarily, but now not able to get E-locker to engage while on jack stands.

can I narrow this down to a rear diff problem?

 

if the drive shaft spins, this sounds more like a diff issue

 

^ Agreed. If you can make the front tires/shafts spin with throttle input, then the T-case is doing its job to some extent and it's likely a rear diff issue. Rear e-locker not engaging seems to confirm this.

Also, this is not a good sign.

 

If the rear driveshaft is turning but not allowing the rear tires to move then you grenaded the rear axle !!

Possible failures.....

Stripped or broken teeth off of either the pinion gear or ring gear

Broke the posi / locker assy

Boke an axle shaft or both

 

I'm no mechanic, but that sounds expensive.

Did the shop give a warranty? How long ago?

 

it was already converted by eliminating rear diff

 

Likely not a warranty issue since it was grenaded during expected use. But never hurts to call.

 

correct. I also had the 5.29 gears cryoed and REM treated. hoping maybe just shaft splines

 

def sounds like the rear diff is toast. Did you do it locally or get a diff setup from ECGS? I toasted mine earlier last year and called up ECGS as I got it from them. No questions send me a new one after they received mine. Alot of shops will give some type of warranty. ECGS is great as its one of the longe rones.

Locally, but a well known pro at regears and lockers.

I had the same thing done to my Ford 9" as I've got a Transbrake and launch at 4k rpm and don't want a problem
