If using 3rd Gen 4Runner (1996-2002) J-Shift transfer case you will need to purchase the following for a Toyota Tacoma as the 4Runner's speed is determined by the ABS system:

@ yotadude520 really appreciate the list. I wanta do the same soon. I was wondering where I could get a list. This helps me alot. Prerunner to 4x4 conversion. I was holding back because I have an auto trans and I was hoping to come across a manual.

 

Glad it helped! This list is a little different for a manual swap - would need the ECU, clutch master, all hydraulic lines, clutch kit and donor tranny!

You can actually buy these new from the dealer for about $65 at my local dealership - part #5880204080B0

 

Didn't know that. It's been a couple of years since I was looking into the conversion and I recall this basically being one of those unicorn finds. Thx for updating, I checked and ordered one online from a local dealer for $55.56


To recap part#s,

5880204080E0 is for an Oak interior

5880204080B0 is for a Charcoal/Dark Grey interior

EDIT: Now that I am looking at it closer, there are different descriptions for the Grey part#. Some say Dark Blue Grey and some say Charcoal/Dark Grey. Oh well, I'll update once I recieve it.

 

Where could I find an ecu for a manual 4x4 conversion?

 

Check around on eBay and car-part.com they're definitely around! They are worth a pretty penny though.

Hi all! New member to the group. Happy to be here.
I took a J shift tcase from a 2000 4Runner and swapped it into my 98 Tacoma. The 4Runner case had a cap where the speedo would go. I removed the cap and installed my speedo, the one from my original tcase. I have no speedometer on my dash and my check engine is on with the PO500. I took the speed sensor out, spun it by hand and it showed MPH. I am confused as to why this is happening. The gear “worm gear”? is on the speed sensor. I even swapped the sensor out with another for shits and giggles, but nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all.

Also sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot, should I have started a new one?

 

I'd buy the speedometer gear that I bought for my swap and see if that works. You're the second person I've heard had this problem so I'm thinking the lengths of the shafts are different.
