Depending what you mean by optics only, and the application, I would imagine it would be more beneficial to use stainless with optics since stainless barrels have greater accuracy potential in most instances. Which leads to if you’re taking advantage of accuracy potential, then it would be preferable to NOT flute, as you want more material for more heat dissipation.

Of course, "Only ACCURATE rifles are interesting".

Optics only means to me, no front sight pin. , as most scope mounted rifles are . An ACOG doesn't require BUS , Nor does a simple scope.
If I run into troubles, I just go home and fix it ;-)
I have several options with heavy barrel profiles, A Handi-rifle (simple, peep sights, no frills) in full bore would be welcome. Something to sling and carry. (Think Win 70 in a modular chassis)

Bull Barrels with optics weigh 10 pounds complete! UGGH!

    ETA

Curious twist on "accuracy" and HEAT DISSIPATION.

In WHAT scenario can be envisioned that would require the pinnical of accuracy after the second shot"

I can NOT imagine ANY .

Bench shooting? One has all the time in the world. It's only wanna be shooting "Groups" that hurry things along and have the pattern blow out.

I mean depending what optics mean to you. Not not having a front sight. I’m sure someone here very well tried to put a aimpoint or eotech on a AR10. That’s not the same a Schmitt and Bender PM2 or Nightforce atacr 5-25 mil/mil. Optics with very different applications in practice.

There’s more more competitions in the world then bench. PRS comes to mind. Ko2m.
3 gun is out there too. I’ve never seen in the military troops in contact involving one enemy combatant…that includes as a sniper. I mean, there’s literally a reason the MTU/m24/m40 contour exist.

I can think of a few other reasons relative to short mags and high pressure rounds in ultra light sporter contours. There are plenty of reasons why a second shot might happen. I’m not saying it’s for you.

As great as people like to say they are on the internet, people get that buck fever and that animal doesn’t go down. I’d hope they’d make a second shot. Sometimes expanding ammo fails. Etc

One shot does not spoil a barrel due to heat, It's the fourth or fifth that cast's the "flyer"

    A Redfield 3X9 is "optics" enough ;-)

I enjoy shooting peeps. The NRA fifty foot small bore at 50 yards is rewarding through peeps.
So much more than 200 yards at 20 X.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Oh crap. I just purchased the Aero Precision M5 lower in 308 this past weekend. I have been looking at YouTube for info and then I was DUMB ENOUGH to search here! Of course if a hobby is going to cost money, there is a tread for it on TacomaWorld!

I look forward to reading what you all have done as I have questions on directions I should take. I am confident I will probably buy a complete upper from Aero though. I will have to see how I feel after I finish the lower.

I think @gixxerphil put his Fedex woes off on me. Aero shipped my upper 2 mondays ago and it has been stuck in Wisconsin for 3-5 days now. I understand I opted for free shipping but damn.

I'm heading to my range/store tomorrow to pick up a gun case I ordered. Feels like an HK kinda day too. And I get free rentals....may give an AR10 a try.

Upper reciever arrived today. It's getting there. It was hard for me to understand just how much biger these rifles are than a 15 until I could compare side by side. Nothing new to y'all but I found it interesting.

The grip might have to go. The MOE angles back further than the K2 and my fingers barely reach the mag release button.
