Sorry to say the machinist trade and skill is dying, and especially the manually operated equipment.
I think even the trade schools these days have very little hands on for conventional machines. All computer numerically controlled stuff.
You might be better off trying to find a mechanically inclined individual and start from scratch.
And a plus someone that looks like Jennifer Lawrence

When I went to trade school 6 years ago, we started with Manual machines, then learned to G-code from scratch before finally playing in mastercam and solidworks. They also taught us to weld as part of the curriculum.

When I had my machine shop schooling CNC was still Science Fiction!!

A computer took up lots of space and everything was entered by manually punched cards

Just like most all the other trades the good stuff is never learned in school .I picked up interesting skills in the Gun Smith Shop

While I can use most all the machine tools 1 or two parts I could handle not all day long.

Having a friend in the electro/ mechanical repair field they hunt for new hires skilled in one or the other even so it takes a sharp person a year to get up to speed and carry some of the workload.

The sad part bigger companies if you don`t have a degree you don`t even get looked at A degree in advanced basket weaving is better then 10 years experience in the job your applying for.

Finding good help is hard !

I know your really busy but the perks you have to a person like me might be a factor just sayin

We've had a couple guys with some little megatronics or PLC class degree, but that definitely didn't make them smart. I even told the guy one day "just cause you have a degree doesn't make you smart!"

Somehow I've gotten this far in my career without any formal training or schooling. This also means I'm debt free from student loans, so there's that. I've just been handy all my life. There was one technician that I worked with at my old job that showed me alot, which got me into where I am today. Ol' Woody could be a cantankerous old cuss, but knew his shit. I knew to soak up as much information from him as well. Alot of miles me and him traveled all over PA and upstate NY...

In my case, they just don't get it. After explaining it three times, I'm done.

When I first started my current place of employment they hired a young guy (20) fresh out of PLC school. I will say that guy was mechanically inclined and I could show him anything and would pick it up. First guy I showed how to stick weld. Also showed several other younger guys stuff and they picked it up. The one we're working with now, yea not so much... I get so damn frustrated! I swear, I'm gonna go gray pretty soon...

Agree. One of the unfortunate things in life is that we often don't find out just what we are good at for a long time. One can like, have an interest and even practice at something and still not be good at it.

I had a guitar several decades ago -- my X made me donate it... Looking back it was the right thing to do as I have no musical abilities what so ever.

That’s what my boss did with me at 20 years old. I never been around mills or lathes or mig welded, only a hacksaw and a Lincoln stick welder. Growing up on a small farm and dad helped a lot.

I’m a hands on learner, you show me one time then let me do it. You can show me 20 times and I won’t learn it until I do it.

When I stared in the shop we had one full time guy and two retired part time guys. They all showed me a lot and shared their experience with me, which I am truly grateful for.

Got a call today from a guy across the street, he wanted to show me a photo and video of two kids ringing doorbells and running this morning at 1am. Blah blah it’s the neighbors kids that live behind us doing kid things in the snow.

Saw the guy and one of his neighbors (a detective) go there this evening and stayed for close to 20 minutes. I haven’t talked to him since.

My phone rang a few minutes ago with no caller ID. I didn’t answer. It rang again. My wife said it’s important.

I answered, it was a deputy

He said do you live at this address? I said nope, that’s the neighbor. He said do you have a kid named this? I said nope, that’s the neighbors. He said you have a number? I said my wife does, gave it to him and he said thanks.

I looked out the window and he was sitting in the store parking lot.

Wait, wait, wait. The sheriffs office is involved in doorbell ringing? Oh FFS, if that's all the kids are getting into that's pretty damn lucky...

If this is the case, I guess I'm not going cow-tipping at the new house with all the farms nearby...

Only thing I can figure is the mom bowed up on the neighbor and he got mad.

She bowed up on my wife years ago which was the wrong thing to do

I don’t get why the cops are involved in doorbell ringing either.
