I only thought of that too as I saw someone else do that last week. Never saw that before.

Zuk did my gears also. Happened to have a set Cryo'd so thats what I have.
He told me, that I'd break an axle before the gears. Hence, what he did.

That had to be a huge pain in the ass, fighting a strong magnet down the axle housing trying to hold it level.

This is the first axle I've seen break cryod or not. Lots of gears. Cryo can only do so much when gear deflection is the cause especially in the OR rears on the 2nd gen. You have a 3rd gen OR with a much improved rear and far less failures. In your case he's probably absolutely right.

If you can take that thing to a machine shop and see if they'll magnaflux the axle where that other one snapped make sure you don't have any hairline fractures. Or just replace both and not worry.

There's your problem , a classic sign of a broken axle , and that a clean shear . Definitely caused excessive axle twist and fatigue . Depending on how bad the broken stub is the splines are twisted inside the carrier . You might need a hammer and drift punch to remove it

As for replacement axles I'd go with a set of aftermarket Chromemolly axle shafts

Personally I'd rather have a shaft break than the diff

Here's a trick to keep track of axle twist ...

Take ea new axle shaft and scribe or paint a straight line from axle flange to the splines . If you pull the axle shafts out a few times per year you can keep track of any axle twist that may happen

This will not work, newer OR, Pro and MT models have a 32 spline axle. Which makes this damage more surprising. Sorry to see your misfortune OP. Hope the rest of the diff is alright.

Personally I would go with aftermarket high strength chromemolly axle shafts if it was me

I've got 40 spline chromemolly axle shafts in my built Ford 9" that's in my Camaro that I had built by Quick performance . Just to give you an idea a stock Ford 9" axle is 28 spline

It's not an uncommon approach with locked fronts/CV axels. Folks would rather replace a shaft than grenade the diff.

I don't disagree at all that it's a great solution for your drag car though

Shit OP is also a 3rd gen I read his model year wrong I thought it was an 06 :rofl:my bad then yep this seems a lot more reasonable to break an axle vs gears. NVM. Reading things correctly helps:anonymous:

I didn't get mine cryo'd but I did ask ECGS about getting the service done. They said it wasn't recommended and were providing the warranty so I rolled with it, but maybe your experience is one strong vote for cryo lol

But a 9 is far different than the yota axles. The 3rd gen OR axle is a little bit weaker than an 8.8. Now I have an 8.8 in the jeep with all the goodies and chromoly shafts and a spool. I'm not sure it'd be worth the money to invest that in a yota axle.

For the yota I'm getting a big 9 (can take 10.5 RG) and going with a 40 spline comp ARB chromo axles, unit bearings, the works.

My Ford 9" from Quick Performance is capable of supporting 1500 plus hp and came with (2) center sections , one for street and one for track use and both have spools . Both built to handle 4000 rpm Transbrake launches but the race setup uses a softer gear to prevent shockload

Chromemolly housing with big bearing ends and back brace

Billet center section with Billet pinion support and Billet yoke

    Billet 40 spline full spool

Rear 11.5 inch disc brake set up
