Hey guys, any of you mountain bikers out there I need a little help. I havent been into mountain biking in 5 years, and since I just moved to Denver I figured this is a good time to get back into it. I started looking for bikes, I want a trail bike that performs well climbing and descending. Have been looking at full suspension bikes, but not sure that I really need it yet. Two bikes so far that I have considered are the Trek Fuel EX 8 and Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp.

Any help or tips for picking the right bike is appreciated!

Well after posting this I see there are a couple similar threads...

I used to sell the Stumpjumper FSR... I can tell you that thing is NICE!!!!! We very very rarely had them come back in for service. I took a whole class on the Specialized bikes and suspension systems. The Stumpy is set up for 50/50. 50% uphill 50% downhill which will be nice for you out in CO. I have no experience in the Trek field so I am of no help there.

mtn bike action magazine generally rates the trek bikes well. sometime early in the yr they usually put out an issue with all the bikes in it and prices etc.

Only Trek mt bike I have is not something you'll find anymore...Lucked out on a freshly painted and pivoted 1995 Trek Y22 frame and Fox shock last year and it became my resurrection bike project of 2010...well, one of my bike projects in 2010. Turned out great, need better pics. In progress pic.........

Don't believe the hype, Specialized sucks. :D

Whatever bike brand you end up buying make sure you get decent components (deore or better). It will make a huge difference in ride quality.

    I must agree!th
I worked in a trek spez bike shop for quite awhile and the bushings swingarm on spez bikes suck. They climb like crap too. (trust me I have one that i never ride) I rock the the 29er now days.
I did own a 2004 fuel 98oclv and that bike rocked, but trek bikes are built for people with long arms legs. I'm short

Save a little longer and get a blur or superlight
And they still make frames in the usa!

lol... i used to sell them... I never had any issues with them besides the lower end bikes (Hardrock...) I have been riding a specialized since 04 and have ridden numerous Specialized test bikes. Not a single problem. If you keep them maintained they do just fine...

i have a specialized enduro and all i can say is the thing is a piece of crap. granted i don't take go easy on it but all my friends that have yetis and scots don't have any issues. sense i bought the enduro i have replaced the rear derular 3 times, replaced the cranks, blew the rear shock, and just blew the fork seals all in about a year. i just got the scot voltage fr and from what i have ridden the thing is amazing. the one thing to keep in mind for riding in Co. is to get a good 6" travel bike or a 29er both routs help with the rocky terrane and steep descents.
