Does anyone have a list of recommended stuff that you like to get done in addition to the stuff in the owner's manual? Went to the dealership today and got screwed over for about $400 on stuff I realized was completely unnecessary after. They did throttle body/fuel injection cleaning and brake fluid at 45k miles. Throttle body/fuel injection from my research never has to be done since it's self cleaning at idle or you can occasionally throw in a $20 bottle of Chevron Techron. Dealer charged about $230 for this. And brake fluid only has to be changed when it's dirty/has debris in it which would likely be well over 45k and would require an honest mechanic which is an oxymoron lol

I'd recommend that you never use the dealer for any service!!
If you are unable to perform your own routine maintenance find a reputable & honest local shop and build a relationship with them.

It doesn't make sense financially for me to do my own maintenance (poor use of my time) and I haven't found a local shop but I'm looking around. I don't really mind paying an up charge for legit stuff at the dealership because it's convenient. I just don't like when they do unnecessary stuff.

It’s really unneeded. Map and throttle body needed to be cleaned anyway

There is a maintenance schedule in the glovebox with the manuals.

That's why I mentioned in addition to that. The manual doesn't cover stuff like fuel system cleaner that many people do and I was wondering if there are other things that are commonly done

Unfortunately you opened the door when you didn't require them to have you pre approve any additional work you didn't ask for............

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, so it's change requirement is more time based than mileage. 2-3 years is about right. (you don't mention the year of your truck) So maybe that was ok. And it does take a special computer application to safely bleed the ABS systems correctly

Well, not really. Just like everything else there are good and bad. Unfortunately it seems to take more effort than it should to find the good.

$400 lesson learned. Dealerships make their profits now from service & parts and you just helped the service writer and service manager increase their pay bonus.

Although you agreed to the service you can always leave a Yelp review and never go back.

FWIW. A dealer or a mechanic can not perform or charge you for work YOU did not AUTHORIZE.

The dealer didn't "screw" you. The dealer upsold you. You accepted and approved, therefore authorized the work.

All of the service interval and information is in your Owner's Manual Service Schedule. Its all detailed in there.

Good Luck with your future service work needs.

Being dishonest is screwing someone over, but maybe we live by different standards. I know what's in the manual that's why I mentioned that in my post. But thanks for the smart ass comment that adds absolutely nothing

This is Toyota's service schedule site. Enter your info and follow it. If you go to a dealer and they tell you something different, ask them where it is on the official Toyota recommendations. They will lie and tell you it isn't on that page... but it needs to be done. It's just a scam. The stuff dealerships try to pull is incredible.

Diff fluid every 15k? I don’t believe that’s what is says in the manual.

It suggests checking at 15k or 18 months.

You let it happen. You skipped right over the stickied posts here just like you skipped reading the owners manual. The only smart ass in that comment was you. Sorry, not sorry. You authorized the work. End of story. Lesson learned, life goes on, let that shit go. Won't end well for you here with that attitude.

Yep they misinformed him to get him to agree to more services. As a consumer it's our responsibility to be informed so we don't get taken advantage of. Read the maintenance thread in the sticky section at the top of the 3rd gen forum. Learn from this experience so it doesn't happen next time.

I downloaded the maintenance schedule from the Toyota site and gave it my local reputable garage for service with them. They opened a file on my Tacoma and will be keeping track of all the maintenance by them in case of Warranty issues come up then I will go to Toyota other than that I keep as far away from the Dealer 2 hours drive not worth it.
