clutch pedal squeaks when pressed

Anyone know what squeaks when i push in the clutch pedal? It sounds like a old rusty spring being expanded.

133k miles clutch has been replaced but it's the pedal.

 

It's the v-shaped torsion spring above the clutch pedal. Disc brake grease on the spring above the clutch has gotten the best results for me so far...applied it about 2 months ago and it's been silent since. White lithium only lasted a week or two.

 

Should i be worried it's going to break? It's not that easy to get to.

 

Not at all. It's not an uncommon issue with mt tacomas.

It's not rusty and it's a larger spring than i thought it was.

 

I have a squeak as well but sounds very much like it comes from the underside of truck rather than that spring.

 

that would be part of the clutch fork then, behind the dust boot on the housing. IF u put some grease on there itll quiet it down nicely

There are plastic bushings on each end and the middle where the clutch pedal contacts it. They wear out and are probably gone. The spring wears the grove in the clutch pedal deeper and eventually your clutch pedal will not come back up properly. If the grove in the clutch pedal is still good, you can replace the bushings, but they will just wear out again. Most people just ditch the coil spring and replace it with a linear one. The 4-cylinder models have a linear spring and the connection points are there on the 6-cylinder trucks, so the change is real easy. You can use a brake pedal return spring, or clutch pedal return spring from a 4-cylinder Tacoma. I doubt it is the same design, but I had a bad squeak in my '89 clutch and found a very small stress crack in the pedal mount housing - PITA to change out and hope this isn't your problem.

 

I investigated to possibility of replacing bushings and/or using a linear spring instead, but it just looked like a really difficult area of the truck to work in. Instead, I went with a bit of grease on the contact points and the squeakiness has been gone for a while. Maybe it will return and I'll have to replace parts, we'll just see.

 

Yea, if you are skinny and flexible it's an easy two-minute job. You can always take out the driver's seat to give you more room. If you were able to get grease on it, you should be able to replace the spring. Removing the coil spring is easy, just put a screw driver in like this and pry. It will pop out. Getting the linear spring on is a little tougher, but not horrible if you remove the drivers seat.

 

Interesting, that's good to know. I just assumed after a quick look that it would be a PITA.
